For decades, environmental scientist and conservationist Daniel Botkin has studied the world around us. He has traveled the globe observing nature and the human impact on the environment, and now he has collected his keen observations into this accessible and informative book.

25 Myths That Are Destroying the Environment explores the many myths circulating in both ecological and political discussions. These myths often drive policy and opinion, and Botkin is here to set the record straight. What may seem like an environmentally conscious action on one hand may very well be bringing about the unnatural destruction of habitats and ecosystems.

Topics include:
- Is life really that fragile?
- Is consensus science?
- Are recent weather patterns truly proof of long term weather change?
-Are wildfires really all that bad?
-Are predators absolutely necessary to control populations of other species?

In a world awash in misleading or false information about the environment, Daniel Botkin has written a straightforward and concise examination of the biggest myths hurting conservation efforts today.
Written in a clear manner that dissects each myth one by one, 25 Myths That Are Destroying the Environment offers readers an informative guide to navigating discussions on environmental issues.
If our society is to sustain the environment around us for future generations, solving environmental problems by understanding how nature works is not just helpful, it's necessary.

Well written and entertaining but there are a few errors
By J. A May
This is a short version of a full book review on my website andymaypetrophysicist.com
I debated a while on 3 or 4 stars, but ultimately settled on 3. The book is very well written and Dr. Botkin’s anecdotes in each chapter are fun to read and educational, but it suffers from a lack of technical detail and several serious mistakes. In the end, the lack of solid scientific evidence and the mistakes knocked my rating down. That said, I am a scientist with 42 years of experience and the book is written for a lay reader. The good writing and the entertaining anecdotes may outweigh the lack of technical detail for many readers. The book is mostly accurate, the only errors I noticed while reading it are discussed in my review and summarized below. So, with those exceptions I do recommend the book.

All of us are for clean air and water, but as Peter Schwartz once wrote, the modern environmental movement is “anti-science, anti-technology, and anti-human.” The radical environmentalists of today latch onto mythical assertions that have no basis in fact; but support the idea that man is bad, man is “destroying” the planet and the natural “balance” of nature. Dr. Botkin, an ecologist and biologist of some note, addresses these assertions. He has held positions at Yale, the University of California at Santa Barbara, George Mason University and Woods Hole Marine Biology Laboratory.

I agree with most of the points in the book, but it doesn’t help that in the forward to the book, by Alfred Runte, we see the following unsubstantiated and clearly false statement:
“Say everyone believed the Earth to be cooling instead of warming. Would we still not want to curtail the use of fossil fuels? Of course, we would, because they are pollutants.”

This assertion not only contradicts the whole point of the book, which is we need to be skeptical of environmentalist’s myths and look to the facts and science, but it is clearly wrong. Fossil fuels are largely responsible for our current high standard of living, our long life spans and arguably played a significant role in eliminating slavery.

When gasoline powered cars were introduced in the late 19th century they were hailed as a clean alternative to transportation by horse and buggy and kerosene provided cheaper, cleaner and safer light at night. Some credit the introduction of cheap kerosene with helping to save whales from extinction. And the truth is the high demand and cost of whale oil (more than $2 per gallon in 1854!) for lamps had drastically reduced the number of whales in the oceans. So, with a current population of seven billion people, fed by a green revolution based on natural gas fertilizer, one must ask what would replace fossil fuels? It is a shame that a book dedicated to exposing environmentalist’s myths should spread one.

One might want to call fossil fuels pollutants, but it is clear that New York, London and every other large city in the world is cleaner today than in the early 1800’s and the reason is cheap energy from fossil fuels. The rare-earth metals used to make windmills and solar arrays, the chlorine that makes our water and fresh vegetables safe, the batteries in our phones can also be called pollutants. This doesn’t mean we curtail their use. Intelligent choices based on appropriate cost-benefit analysis are necessary. This was a federal judge’s instructions to the EPA recently when he ordered the organization to consider jobs lost when considering air pollution regulations. One shouldn’t say “curtail the use of” anything as important as energy regardless of the facts or consequences. Fortunately, most of the rest of the book is more sensible.

The first myth discussed in the book is that man is the only creature that changes the environment. In truth, all creatures change their environment and the environment of the world to some degree. That is how they survive and thrive. The largest changes are made by plants when they produce the oxygen we breath and the wood that we build with and so on.

The next myth is that life and the environment are fragile and man is precipitating the next great extinction event. The Earth has seen five major extinctions. These were all before man evolved and they were truly horrific. The worst extinction was the Permian mass extinction (250 million years ago) when an estimated 70% to 96% of all species went extinct. Myth #3 is that extinction is unnatural, but today there are an estimated 1.5 million species on the Earth and roughly one species goes extinct every year on average. Most species that have ever existed are currently extinct due to the 3.5 billion-year history of life on Earth.

Myths 4 through 11 deal with the “balance of nature” idea. That is nature is in a delicate balance and man somehow screws this up. The reality is nothing in the environment is constant; everything is always changing.

Nature is not in balance and it has no need of balance. Man, especially land owners and the wealthy want nature to be in balance. They don’t want their property, buildings and houses threatened.

A corollary to the “balance” idea is that we have a perfect set of species in the world today. Each plays a unique role and if any one of these are lost the whole ecosystem fails. Dr. Botkin explains that this is utter nonsense. There are roles to be played in any ecosystem and usually more than one species can fulfill a specific role. Some say man is not a part of nature, but is a contaminant. This is not true we are a part of nature, not separate from it. We did not arrive from outer space.

Myth #12: Are people the most important factor determining the Earth’s climate? Dr. Botkin says no. The processes affecting the Earth’s climate are complex and man is only a midget among giants. His discussion of this topic is quite good.

Myth #13 is that climate change will lead to a huge number of extinctions. The truth is that even though we are in the Quaternary ice age and have been for the past 2.6 million years, there have been very few extinctions. The climate changes, both warming and cooling, observed in the Quaternary far exceed anything predicted by the climate alarmists for the future, yet only one tree went extinct in North America in that period. Myth #14 is that recent weather is proof of climate change. How this myth persists in mainstream news organizations, like the Economist, when every qualified scientist (alarmists and skeptics) says no weather event can be attributed to climate change is beyond understanding.

Myth #15, consensus is science. Dr. Botkin notes that science is a process of questioning ideas. Scientific statements can be tested and proven wrong, otherwise the statement is not scientific. If the statement survives the tests; it is acceptable and potentially valid. Consensus has nothing to do with scientific validity. One of the problems with the “consensus statement” that man is causing dangerous climate change is it cannot be tested. Thus, the statement is not scientific.

Myths #23 and #24 are the first of his myths that I disagree with. He claims that solar and wind energy do not require large amounts of land and could provide a “large” percentage of US electricity by 2050. He doesn’t say what “large” means, but we can assume 30% to 40% or more for the sake of argument. He says rooftop solar should be sufficient for most homes and that wind farms don’t need as much land as the critics claim. He doesn’t provide any evidence to back up his claims. For another, more quantitative look at the practicality of solar and wind, I would refer the interested reader to the late Cambridge engineering professor Sir David MacKay’s excellent book Sustainable Energy – Without the Hot Air.

Dr. Botkin refers only to “solar and wind capacity” in his chapter and ignores the need for fossil fuel backup at night and on windless days. We will ignore these rather obvious flaws in his argument because he is missing the larger and more important point of cost. The costs of solar and wind must include fossil fuel backup, electrical grid enhancement to handle intermittent and out of phase power sources, and installation and maintenance. Using batteries to store solar and wind power are out of the question, they are enormously expensive. Germany’s Energiewende goal was to increase their share of renewable energy to 40% by 2050. According to an MIT Technology Review they are very unlikely to make it. Yet, German electricity costs are among the highest in the world and high enough to force factories overseas, often to the US where electricity costs about one-third as much. Siemans moved their oil and gas global headquarters to Houston from Erlangen and their natural gas turbine manufacturing to Charlotte, North Carolina. This move cost Germany 4,500 jobs. Austrian electricity is not as expensive as in Germany, but still over twice as much as in the US. For this reason, Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine built a steel making plant next to Corpus Christi, Texas and shut down a similar plant in Austria due to the lower cost of natural gas in Texas. Germany subsidizes their alternative energy through electricity-bill surcharges, the alternative power financed in this way will cost 25B Euros this year, but will only buy 3.6B Euros of electricity on the open market according to the German economics ministry.

Aside from the flawed forward by Alfred Runte and the unsupported assertions about wind and solar in myths #23 and #24, the book is generally a good read. Usually, qualified scientists, like Dr. Botkin, once they dig into climate science come to the same conclusion he did. That there is no scientific support for the ideas that man is the major cause of climate change and we are headed to a man-made climate change disaster. I applaud him for speaking out on the subject. His discussion on climate change is technically light, like the rest of the book, but I noticed no inaccuracies and it was a fair treatment of the subject.

The most interesting parts of the book were those that dealt with the ecological myths. These centered around the supposed “balance of nature,” species extinctions and persistence. He is a well-known expert in these areas and it shows. These chapters are very good. So, all in all, I do recommend the book. It is most appropriate for the non-technical reader.

A VERY IMPORTANT READ FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF CONTROVERSIES IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
By kenneth purdy
This is a truly important book. Dr. Daniel Botkin makes very valuable contributions offering clarity in what has been a very murky and often enervating controversy in modern times. Written for the lay reader, the book clears up a great deal of the distortion and deception that has had very bad effect on scientific integrity in the broad field of environmental science. Botkin, an eminent educator/researche/rauthor in the science of the earth is a courageous voice responding to the cacophony of distortion and outright fraud perpetrated by so many in this field. If you have wondered what has caused such an uproar of disagreement about the global warming controversy and so many other common beliefs about what has been going on in the environment, this is the book for you. Botkin offers compelling fresh insights about a long list of commonly held beliefs, showing them to be myths. A quick look at the list of chapters addressing the 25 myths makes it irresistible.
The language is lucid and the photos/ illustrations are fascinating, making it very reader friendly. I am a lay reader myself. I have read widely seeking to understand what has been going on in the contentious volume of writing/reporting about these matters. My opinion is that you will find it very hard to find any better source to help you penetrate these controversies. Go for it.

By Tony Meyer
I agree with Mr May in his fine book-review. But in my opinion the book for sure deserves five stars. There are some minor errors, yes; but we need all the help we can get in fighting the phony environmentalists who are anti G-d, anti-intellectual, anti-science, anti-mankind, and anti-progress. Mr Botkin shows courage to author such a study when he is a prominent ecologist. It wouldn't surprise me if Mr Botkin is receiving flack from his colleagues. The illustrations/ photos are excellent. The explanations are lucid and i highly recommend Mr Botkin's superb work.

El Sistema: Orchestrating Venezuela's Youth, by Geoffrey Baker

The Venezuelan youth orchestra program known as "El Sistema" has attracted much attention internationally, partly via its flagship orchestra, The Simn Bolvar Youth Orchestra, headed by Gustavo Dudamel, and partly through its claims to use classical music education to rescue vulnerable children. Having been met overwhelmingly with praise, The System has become an inspiration for music educators around the globe. Yet, despite its fame, influence, and size - it is projected to number a million students in Venezuela and has spread to dozens of countries - it has been the subject of surprisingly little scrutiny and genuine debate.

In this first full-length critical study of the program, Geoffrey Baker explores the career of its founder, Jos Antonio Abreu, and the ideology and organizational dynamics of his institution. Drawing on a year of fieldwork in Venezuela and interviews with Venezuelan musicians and cultural figures, Baker examines El Sistema's program of "social action through music," reassessing widespread beliefs about the system as a force for positive social change. Abreu, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, emerges as a complex and controversial figure, whose project is shaped by his religious education, economics training, and political apprenticeship. Claims for the symphony orchestra as a progressive pedagogical tool and motor of social justice are questioned, and assertions that the program prioritizes social over musical goals and promotes civic values such as democracy, meritocracy, and teamwork are also challenged.

Placing El Sistema in historical and comparative perspective, Baker reveals that it is far from the revolutionary social program of contemporary imagination, representing less the future of classical music than a step backwards into its past. A controversial and eye-opening account sure to stir debate, El Sistema is an essential read for anyone curious about this phenomenon in the worlds of classical music, education, and social development.

Review

"El Sistema is a social action tool aimed at facilitating occupational, pedagogical, social, and ethical salvation of children and young people through the instruction and collective practice of music. Recommended." --Choice

"Geoffrey Baker has done real service to all of us who think about issues of music education, and indeed of education, far beyond the ES project. In the current neoliberal context, we need such critiques to keep us on our toes and, ultimately, to help us care for our children."--Music and Letters

Peeling back the onion on El Sistema
By Classic Music Lover
Somebody eventually had to write a book about the reality behind the El Sistema hype, if only to correct the record. And now someone has.

Geoffrey Baker's style of writing may not be everyone's cup of tea, but he maneuvers behind the propaganda and gets to the heart of the matter in a way no one else has to date. The rhetoric of El Sistema's PR machine has gotten pretty tiresome, and now we learn just how fabricated much of the story has been all along. El Sistema didn't start out as a social engineering project at all -- it was merely an orchestral program focusing on youth. All the social stuff got tacked on to the narrative in subsequent years, with El Sistema's constitutional provisions changed as late as 2011. Peel back the El Sistema onion, and what we find is a throwback to the "bad old days" of orchestra programs wherein students are bullied ruthlessly and made to practice impossibly long hours -- always just one step away from dismissal.

One of the most pernicious aspects of El Sistema's fabulist narrative is how so many other programs have sprung up in other countries in emulation. Fortunately, many of them have adopted the kernels of positive traits in El Sistema and chucked the rest. But the granddaddy Venezuelan program is probably beyond redemption at this point.

A much needed, critical review of philosophy and practices of El Sistema
By GDL
This is a very important and insightful critique of the El Sistema youth orchestra movement in Venezuela. The qualitative methods and scholarly work by Baker in this book are first-rate and serve as a valuable counterbalance to the highly idealized, and often romanticized, accounts of this youth orchestra movement as described by other authors and spokespersons who argue for the value of "El Sistema inspired programs" internationally. The book also reminds the reader that the high levels of El Sistema musical performances are not in question. Baker's message is that the principles, beliefs and practices of El Sistema, despite its long history in Venezuela, have not been thoroughly examined for their claims for social action, inclusiveness, or scope of pedagogy. This book attempts to fill this void by questioning hard what El Sistema really represents and what evidence for its success is. Surprising to those who have only listened to the Dr. Abreu or his acolytes, the author finds that the claims for El Sistema's success are highly contested by many of those who have administered or participated in the program (and who were interviewed by Baker under conditions of anonymity). The results of his analysis suggest that the reality of the program may be at great odds with the messages of Dr. Abreu and his circle, and at philosophical odds with progressive music educators who do not agree with view that a music education that is principally focused on western classical orchestral performance, with its highly conformist, hierarchical structures, narrow pedagogy and autocratic leadership, is a good model for a democratic society. While this book may be uncomfortable for those already committed to El Sistema, it is an essential read for anybody interested in the future of music education in our society. For those who wish to go beyond the strictures of the El Sistema of the past, this book offers implicit guidance for reforming El Sistema practices for the good of its adoption in the U.S.

Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior, by Leonard Mlodinow

Leonard Mlodinow, the best-selling author of The Drunkard’s Walk and coauthor of The Grand Design (with Stephen Hawking), gives us a startling and eye-opening examination of how the unconscious mind shapes our experience of the world and how, for instance, we often misperceive our relationships with family, friends, and business associates, misunderstand the reasons for our investment decisions, and misremember important events.

Your preference in politicians, the amount you tip your waiter—all judgments and perceptions reflect the workings of our mind on two levels: the conscious, of which we are aware, and the unconscious, which is hidden from us. The latter has long been the subject of speculation, but over the past two decades researchers have developed remarkable new tools for probing the hidden, or subliminal, workings of the mind. The result of this explosion of research is a new science of the unconscious and a sea change in our understanding of how the subliminal mind affects the way we live.

Employing his trademark wit and lucid, accessible explanations of the most obscure scientific subjects, Leonard Mlodinow takes us on a tour of this research, unraveling the complexities of the subliminal self and increasing our understanding of how the human mind works and how we interact with friends, strangers, spouses, and coworkers. In the process he changes our view of ourselves and the world around us.

Guest Reviewer: V.S. Ramachandran on Subliminal
V.S. Ramachandran is a neuroscientist known for his work in the fields of behavioral neurology and visual psychophysics. The author of The Tell-Tale Brain, He is the Director of the Center for Brain and Cognition, and is currently a Professor in the Department of Psychology and the Neurosciences Graduate Program at the University of California, San Diego.

This delightfully accessible yet intellectually rigorous book transcends traditional boundaries between neuroscience, psychology and philosophy, to tackle the riddle of the unconscious mind. Freud bashing is a popular intellectual pastime these days (I myself have been guilty on occasion) but Mlodinow shows that by emphasizing the unconscious he was on the right track: we are completely unaware of the vast majority of events going on inside our brains. The book presents compelling evidence gleaned from a variety of sources to show that much of our behavior is governed not so much by our conscious mind – which is prone to claim credit – but by a cauldron of motives, drives and unconscious propensities of which we are largely oblivious. Indeed, most of our actions are carried out by the unconscious mind (or minds ) which exists in peaceful harmony with the conscious person "inside" your body. The question of why we are conscious of the tip of the iceberg of neural activity continues to remain elusive but, perhaps, the answer can be found by asking what you can do without being conscious; What’s the IQ of the unconscious mind? Here Mlodinow offers dazzling new insights into what the unconscious can and does do, to influence our lives.

Fascinating, Funny, and Necessary Read
By Joseph G. Wick
I bought the Kindle version.

This is a wonderful book for those concerned with the function and potential of the mind. The author is a famous and respected theoretical physicist. He apparently has a lot of free time and intense interest that he has parlayed into doctoral-level knowledge of how the mind functions. You will find a great amount of surprising information here. One example is the phenomenon of "blind-sight," which he discusses thoroughly.

The title is a bit deceiving. It is not about manipulating people through advertising. Rather it is about the importance of the unconscious mind in everything we do and perceive. The word "unconscious" with its Freudian connotations is inaccurate. Perhaps "nonconscious" is better. The author shows that the nonconscious mind accounts for more of our ideas, perceptions, and actions than we normally believe.

The author pulls out all the stops in surveying what we know, from the early history of Psychology to the newest functional MRI studies. It is a wonderfully organized and extensive survey.Yet, this is no dull treatise. The author has a great sense of organization, a lucid writing style, and an ability to relate sophisticated concepts to everyday experience. Moreover, he is very witty. It is virtually impossible to read this book without laughing out loud here and there.

As a lawyer I have to say that I think every judge and jury in the country should be required to read this book. It would be as worthwhile for teachers, legislators and many others.

Despite its "non-academic" style, this book supplies copious notes and extensive bibliography. On balance, this is a great addition to any thoughtful person's library.

Ordered several of Leonard Mlodinow's books by chance by browsing what Amazon's computer brain in the sky "thinks" I might like to browse. This is the first one of Mlodinow's books I've read, but bought 3 of them. Fascinating book this! Had to force myself to get some sleep. His books have to do with how our brains work and this one explores how some neuroscientists (not dry reading) discovered we can't change habits but we can "replace" one habit with another... The AH-HA moments the neuroscientists came too is a fascinating, wonderfully-touching tale, because just by chance... I leave you at this point. Just by chance maybe, you will understand why when you read the book too. Also chose "The Drunkard's Walk - How Randomness Rules Our Lives" and the "Upright Thinkers".

Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior by Leonard Mlodinow

"Subliminal" is the provocative and fascinating look at the unconscious part of our minds. One of my favorite authors and physicists, Leonard Mlodinow, takes the readers on a journey into the science of the unconscious. What a fun and enlightening book this was. Mlodinow is the master of making the difficult accessible and fun for the masses. How are mind works is one of the most interesting subjects and I was thrilled to see that the coauthor of both the Grand Design and the equally interesting book War of the Worldviews makes his latest venture into this intriguing science. This excellent 272-page book is composed of the following ten chapters: 1. The New Unconscious, 2. Senses Plus Mind Equals Reality, 3. Remembering and Forgetting, 4. The Importance of Being Social, 5. Reading People, 6. Judging People by Their Covers, 7. Sorting People and Things, 8. In-Groups and Out-Groups, 9. Feelings, and 10. Self.

Positives:
1. A fascinating topic (science of the unconscious) in the hands of a master.
2. Elegant, conversational tone that makes this book a treat to read.
3. Mlodinow consistently produces great books and this one lived up to my expectations.
4. As accessible a book as you will find. A difficult topic made easy and fun to read.
5. The book is loaded with great and I mean great examples to help the reader grasp the latest in the science. One of the books strengths.
6. Great use of science history.
7. The pioneers of the science of the unconscious.
8. Great use the latest scientific research in this fascinating topic to support well-stated positions.
9. You will end up with a better grasp at how our brains work.
10. A good use of illustrations.
11. Great quotes and factoids abound, "The truth is that our unconscious minds are active, purposeful, and independent."
12. Evolution...why our brains evolved to be what they are.
13. A truly exceptional study that mirrors the subjects' sexual preferences.
14. What modern neuroscience tells us about our brains and how we perceive the world.
15. How our memory system works. Who does it change over time? Find out.
16. Social interactions and the subliminal. Theory of mind. The three regions of the brain and the three basic types of nonverbal communication.
17. An interesting look at stereotyping.
18. Popular misconceptions analyzed.
19. What do we know about our feelings our emotions? Find out.
20. The ways to the truth...our worldviews.
21. How our brain creates unconscious biases.
22. Is unrealistic optimism good for you?
23. Great links.

Negatives:
1. Notes are great but a formal bibliography never hurts.
2. Nothing about supernatural beliefs and why they are so prevalent.
3. Having to get multiple copies to share.

In summary, I loved this book. It was an intellectual treat. The science of the unconscious is a fascinating topic and this book was loaded with a lot of great research. Mlodinow is a great author who is able to tackle complex topics and make it fun and interesting to read. If you want to learn about the science of the unconscious, make a conscious decision to get this one, I highly recommend it!!

Further suggestions: "The Grand Design" and "War of the Worldviews: Science Vs. Spirituality" coauthored by this same author were excellent, "Why People Believe Weird Things: Pseudoscience, Superstition, and Other Confusions of Our Time" and "The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies---How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths" by Michael Shermer, "The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature" by Steven Pinker, Hardwired Behavior: What Neuroscience Reveals about Morality" by Laurence Tancredi, "Who's in Charge?: Free Will and the Science of the Brain" Michael S. Gazzaniga, "The Belief Instinct: The Psychology of Souls, Destiny, and the Meaning of Life" by Jesse Bering, "50 Popular Beliefs That People Think Are True" by Guy P. Harrison, "Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts" by Carol Tavris. For the record, I have reviewed all the aforementioned books, enjoy.

Review from Books That Heal Kids
By Books That Heal Kids
Julia Cook's books are an absolute hit with our students. I was ecstatic when I found Personal Space Camp. I'd already been using My Mouth Is A Volcano to reinforce school skills like raising your hand and waiting your turn to talk. But what about when kids are in each others space during 'carpet time' or pushing and shoving in the cafeteria line? These behaviors can make instruction difficult and cause a lot of teacher angst. I don't know how many times I've had to say, 'Please, keep your hands to yourself.' Personal Space Camp is a life saver book. Angst will be decreased!

Okay, so in defense of the kids - developmentally it's really difficult to sometimes be in control of yourself. Kids need to move and wiggle around. However, they need extra guidance building awareness of themselves and those around them before the wiggling offends another student. When there are 20 some bodies in a classroom - we have to learn to work and live together. And newsflash - negative reinforcement doesn't build awareness - it just makes kiddos feel bad. I use Personal Space Camp as a social awareness teaching tool because it makes kids feel GOOD about themselves. They love learning about the concept of personal space and how it can affect others positively and negatively. Most importantly, the story is engaging and Louis is a VERY likeable character. We also copy Louis and use the same strategies in the book. The kids love being jammed into a hula hoop and reflection gets those light bulbs flashing about personal space. And here is the best part, author Julia Cook wrote a supplementary activity and idea book!! Activities galore! I got my hands on it this Spring and started integrating the lessons in small groups. The main reason the guide rocks is because the activities provide cool visuals for the students. Yep, your lessons on personal space just got even MORE engaging! Educators, get this one on your shelf. When teaching classroom routines, make this part of your curriculum.

Funny book on serious topic
By James Guilford
This book is great for those k-3rd grade kids who don't seem to understand that not everyone wants them in their face. Lois goes about his day crashing into people (flying through space) and is told he would have to go to Personal Space Camp. He is all excited because he imagines that he'll be flying rockets or getting to eat astronaut's ice cream. When he sees hoola hoops on the floor, he is confused... I love the gray pictures of Lois's imagination and how he views his world (or more appropriately, his out-of-this-world) experiences. At the end he finally realizes that he had misunderstood what others had been saying all along. The humor is just what this topic needs and it allows the kids to grow without being embarrassed.

Great book!
By Steve21
I bought this for my daughter who I am trying to teach the importance of giving her friends/ people space. This is a great book because it doesn't make your child feel bad about their behavior but rather explain to them why it makes people uncomfortable and ways to realize that you are or are not giving people the space and comfort level that everyone deserves and is entitled to.

Fallingwater: A Frank Lloyd Wright Country House, by Edgar Kaufmann Jr.

Considered Frank Lloyd Wright's domestic masterpiece, Fallingwater is recognized worldwide as the paradigm of organic architecture. Here, in beautiful photographs, the first as-built measured plans, and an intimate narrative by a key figure, is the fascinating story of this masterwork.

Fallingwater is the most famous modern house in America. Indeed, readers of the Journal of the American Institute of Architects voted it the best American building of the last 125 years! Annually, more than 128,000 visitors seek out Fallingwater in its remote mountain site in southwestern Pennsylvania. Considered Frank Lloyd Wright's domestic masterpiece, the house is recognized worldwide as the paradigm of organic architecture, where a building becomes an integral part of its natural setting.

This charming and provocative book is the work of the man best qualified to undertake it, who was both apprentice to Wright and son of the man who commissioned the house. Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., closely followed the planning and construction of Fallingwater, and lived in the house on weekends and vacations for twenty-seven years-until, following the deaths of his parents, he gave the house in 1963 to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to hold for public enjoyment and appreciation.

This is a personal, almost intimate record of one man's fifty-year relationship to a work of genius that only gradually revealed its complexities and originality. With full appreciation of the intentions of both architect and client, Mr. Kaufmann described this remarkable building in detail, telling of its extraordinary virtues but not failing to reveal its faults. One section of the book focuses on the realities of Fallingwater as architecture. A famous building right from its beginnings (only partly because it was Wright's first significant commission in more than a decade), Fallingwater has accumulated considerable publicity and analysis-much of it off the mark. Mr. Kaufmann outlined and dealt with the common misunderstandings that have obscured the building's true values and supplied accurate information and interpretations. In another section Mr. Kaufmann provided an in-depth essay on the subtleties of Fallingwater, the ideology underlying its esthetics. A key element of this is the close interweaving of the house and its rugged, challenging setting, which he explicated in fascinating detail.

The author maintained throughout the direct approach of one who knew and loved Fallingwater. As an apprentice and loyal admirer of the architect, Mr. Kaufmann was well attuned to the architecture. And as a retired professor of architectural history and frequent lecturer and panelist, he had considerable experience in presenting and interpreting Wright's ideas. Thoroughly versed in the books, articles, drawings, and buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright, Mr. Kaufmann was eminently situated to place Fallingwater in that context. This unique record was presented in celebration of Fallingwater's fiftieth anniversary.

Special features of this volume include: numerous never-before published photographs of the house under construction, during its entire history, and of the family in residence; a room-by-room pictorial survey in full color taken especially for this volume; isometric architectural perspectives that explain visually how the house was constructed; and the first accurate, measured plans of the house as built.

From Library Journal
An engaging, intimate, sumptuous appreciation of Wright's 1936 house in Bear Run, Pennsylvania. Kaufmann is the distinguished architectural historian who trained with Wright and is the son of the clients for Fallingwater, the most famous modern house in America. He is able to explain the intentions of architect and client, and writes with both feeling and critical knowledge, having lived in and with the masterpiece all his life. The rich color photographs taken for this book are supported by views taken during construction, family photographs of the house in use, and excellent specially drawn plans of the house as built. A work of loving scholarship, beautifully presented, Fallingwater is highly recommended for all collections. Jack Perry Brown, Ryerson & Burnham Libs., Art Inst. of Chicago

Review
"…never has [Kaufmann's] account been so astute and revealing, and never has the resulting building been so brilliantly portrayed as in this volume…As the reader views Fallingwater in a series of stunning illustrations, Kaufmann gives a more intimate view of what the house has meant to him personally and what role it has played in assuring Wright an enduring place in architectural history." — Booklist

"An engaging, intimate, sumptuous appreciation of Wright's 1936 house in Bear Run, Pennsylvania…[Kaufmann] is able to explain the intentions of architect and client, and writes with both feeling and critical knowledge, having lived in and with the masterpiece all his life. A work of loving scholarship, beautifully presented, Fallingwater is highly recommended for all collections." — Library Journal

Kudos - Exquisite New Visions of a World Treasture
By Larry A. Woodin
In the introduction Ms. Waggoner raises the question of whether another book on Fallingwater would be useful, "hasn't it all been said; what is new; what more can be shown?" Clearly there was a great deal more to say, to learn and to see and in this book all of it is said gracefully and intelligently, elucidated clearly and illustrated beautifully. BRAVO! This is a work for study and contemplation. Spend time, meditate on the concepts, absorb - or enter into - the photographs and revel in more than you can ever gain from a single visit, or even many visits, to this compelling masterwork.

I have had the privilege of visiting Fallingwater many times, in all seasons, under many weather conditions and many times of day and night. What a gift to have a book that captures such a diverse range of perceptions through clear description, thoughtful interpretation and phenomenal photography. Each of the authors included in this volume has studied this World Treasure thoroughly over many years. We are privileged to share in the fruits of seven author's experience and wisdom. Each of them has written on a particular aspect of the building and its site, its contents, the history of the building and the life of the family for whom it was conceived and built by the genius architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Buy this book and revel with me as these authors provide new insights into the history of the building, the experience of the building in its magnificent setting and let your mind open as they suggest perceptions of the building (along with its furnishings, art and personal memorabilia of the family) that will make our understanding of this masterwork richer and more complete. Explore this book over time and then visit Fallingwater in person; for the first time or again and yet again. The experience is different each time and, to put it simply, being at Fallingwater is good for the soul. Allow each visit to deepen your appreciation of this unique work of Art in Nature.

Finally, I must comment specifically on the photography. Christopher Little's photographs capture this work in views that it would take us many many visits to accumulate and he provides perspectives and details not previously shown, (or at least not shown so beautifully) views that invite us to see more deeply! (eg. see fig. 19 - the aerial photograph used to illustrate Professor Levine's masterful essay "To Hear Fallingwater Is To See It In Time" and the wonderful photos of Fallingwater in fog.) By carefully selecting the `scope' of each photograph Little has achieved the seemingly impossible; he has suspended the experience of music one chord, or one phrase, at a time. The cumulative achievement is to allow the viewer to take one step at a time and to pause to explore the emotional depth that is Fallingwater.

Brilliant! Masterful! We are deeply indebted to Waggoner and each of her contributors for offering this remarkable achievement.

Terrific back story
By Victoria
Although listed as a used book, it appeared as new. Wonderful background details of the construction. I bought it for a friend who is an architect and it was perfect for him. There are a number of technical drawings and correspondence between builder and owner.

What a Frank Lloyd Wright book SHOULD be.
By Steve in Memphis
I have a number books on the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the others show mainly living rooms and dining rooms, with an occasional bedroom, hardly ever a glimpse of a kitchen, and never a bathroom. They really leave me wanting for more. This book has the detail that I have always wished for. This is a thick book with lots of great pictures of Fallingwater, and the book is well worth the price. I would like to find books of this caliber on some of his other houses. Highly recommended.

Written like a Technical Book
By E. G. Huynh
The book is poorly constructed. Pages fall out easily. Plenty of examples. Ideas and concepts explained in detail. Some problems were explained in the examples, some aren't so you'll have to do research outside the book to get some answers. Assumes that you have some previous knowledge/background in electronics so the reading is at an intermediate level. The writing is very technical and it is easy to get confused and bored. I feel that the way it was written is a little too technical and the information was very dry. It was definitely not explained in a manner that makes concepts easy to understand which made reading a chapter a tiresome process. Not very fun to read but I did learn a lot from it.

Great Resource - Kept this one after the course was over
By happycritter
Excellent book for the technician. The authors actually explain what a device does instead of the usual "...the majority carriers can be found..." gobbledygook most EE texts are filled with. Some folks are only interested in learning what a device does and how to implement it, not necessarily build one from scratch. A very good survey of technical devices and applications suitable for a freshman/sophmore course.

Several thorough technique books.
By Amazon Customer
You get a lot of pages your money here, from old sources, very well-versed in these somewhat fading arts. I would give 5 stars, but have some minor criticism of this compilation. First, all the books are essentially identical in their content. Read one and you have pretty much read what all the others have to say. There is some variation in individual bobbin lace patterns, but virtually no difference in the catalogs of stitches. Also the majority of the material is dedicated to bobbin/pillow lace patterns. I would have liked to see filet (lacis) get a little more attention, but I feel pretty picky saying so. Overall a very good deal, especially if you want to explore Torchon in depth.
