In Fallen Words, Yoshihiro Tatsumi takes up the oral tradition of rakugo and breathes new life into it by shifting the format from spoken word to manga. Each of the eight stories in the collection is lifted from the Edo-era Japanese storytelling form. As Tatsumi notes in the afterword, the world of rakugo, filled with mystery, emotion, revenge, hope, and, of course, love, overlaps perfectly with the world of Gekiga that he has spent the better part of his life developing.

These slice-of-life stories resonate with modern readers thanks to their comedic elements and familiarity with human idiosyncrasies. In one, a father finds his son too bookish and arranges for two workers to take the young man to a brothel on the pretext of visiting a new shrine. In another particularly beloved rakugo tale, a married man falls in love with a prostitute. When his wife finds out, she is enraged and sets a curse on the other woman. The prostitute responds by cursing the wife, and the two escalate in a spiral of voodoo doll cursing. Soon both are dead, but even death can't extinguish their jealousy.

Tatsumi's love of wordplay shines through in the telling of these whimsical stories, and yet he still offers timeless insight into human nature.

Born in 1935, Yoshihiro Tatsumi began writing and drawing comics for a sophisticated adult readership in a realistic style he called Gekiga. He has influenced generations of cartoonists and lives in Japan.

"The pleasures of rakugo emerge from this universal, mutable quality"

"Fallen Words," or rakugo, as the Japanese call them, are stories handed down throughout the generations to be molded and kindled to the ways of contemporary life. This is Tatsumi at his nicest, as he notes in the afterword saying that most gekiga of the past eschewed humor. True, this has nothing of the grief of "Hell" or "Push Man" but those looking for something lighter will find this mostly enjoyable. The little boy in "New Years Festival," the moment of art transcending mimicry in "Escape of the Sparrows," the final scene with the Reaper in "The God of Death," and a man sharing a kiss with his ex-wife's spirit through a tobacco pipe in "Fiery Spirits" are all memorable. But where's the humor? Sadly, my fat white American body and small mind are not familiar with the "rakugo" of past, so something is sort of lost between cultures. Many of the stories are thirty page build ups to one punch line, and sometimes it works, but sometimes it sits like cold sake.

Listen, the dude is a legend in comix and even the worst story here is worth your time, but expect nothing of the tragic characters or moral ennui of the past gekiga works. D&Q rarely picks a flub, and this is no different. Recommended for the initiated.

Stories to raise your spirits

Yoshihiro Tatsumi adopts "rakugo", in Japanese meaning "fallen words", a kind of comedic fable-storytelling that was an aural tradition for many centuries in Japan. In these eight collected stories, Tatsumi's masterful storytelling is shorn of its usual tragic veil seen in books like "Good-bye" and "Abandon the Old in Tokyo", instead taking a light-hearted stance tinged with physical comedy.

The stories are all brilliant, bar none: Tatsumi sets all of them in the Edo period so the reader is treated to traditional Japanese culture set in a romanticised past, free of the Western influence of later years. They have a flavour of whimsy and fantasy about them - one involves a drunken artist paying for his bed and board by drawing some sparrows onto a screen. Once sunlight falls upon them, the sparrows come to life! In a different story, a man whose wife and mistress die after cursing one another through a voodoo-type doll, is haunted by their ghosts depicted as fiery spirits; while in another story a penniless man meets the God of Death and hatches a scheme to make money from the Grim Reaper.

The book is set out like a Japanese book so the reader has to read from right to left instead of left to right, though of course the writing is in English. It adds to overall experience of reading Japanese literature.

The aspect of the stories that I think will jar the reader are the endings which are by turns anti-climactic, bizarre, and slapsticky, as if Tatsumi ran out of space and abruptly ended each story on a strange note. This is in fact part of the "rakugo" style of storytelling where each story has comedic elements with the ending providing a punchline to the tale. The stories of "rakugo" were meant to be performed so each story had to have physical comedy as a part of them with the story changing depending on who told it. Tatsumi ambitiously converts this stylistic storytelling into comics and, while the comedy might not translate so well for a 21st century Western audience (hell, even Japanese readers might find the comedy a bit lax), this is all part of the rakugo experience.

But this is a minor complaint as the stories are so brilliantly told that I didn't care about how it ended but how he got there. Tatsumi started writing comics in his teens and is now in his late 70s - the man understands comics so indelibly that reading him is an absolute joy. He understands how to set out a story and tell it perfectly with the right amount of panels - he is a true master of the art and reading "Fallen Words" reminded me once again how much I enjoy reading his comics, as well as reminding me why I love comics in the first place. It's an art form unlike any other and when it's done well, it's the best thing in the world.

While this isn't Tatsumi's best work - read "A Drifting Life" for that - for readers who want to sample his work without perhaps the darker tones of his more well-known books "The Push Man" and the two I mentioned at the start, "Fallen Words" is a fine place to begin. As a long-time fan of his work, I loved all eight strange tales of historical Japan and it's collection of con artists, geishas, ghosts, and artists with themes of death, life, fun, silliness, and love.

A game changer for anyone who actually wants to find Mr (or Mrs) Right!

This has been a completely transformational book for me! I was at the point of giving up on online dating (and perhaps dating altogether!), having been incredibly frustrated by the process. I had done my profile, got a couple of friends to look at it and we agreed it was fine. I put it on a couple of dating sites and waited. The response I got was really bad. Yes, plenty of comments from men, but none that I actually wanted to respond to. I didn't seem to be attracting the men I wanted to be attracting, and logging on to find endless winks from people was not inspiring me to take things further.

I was so close to throwing in the towel when I remembered this book. I had seen it advertised a while ago, and decided to give it a go. I was really pleased to be able to download it straight to kindle on my phone, and within a weekend I had read it and done all the activities because, although there is quite a lot of information, I was so engaged in the content! It was presented in an accessible way and made SO much sense. I could instantly see where I was going wrong.

I re-wrote my profile and put it online. I could not believe the difference in response. Even though I was being much more open and honest, which I thought may get the wrong kind of attention, I was amazed by how differently men were interacting with me straight away. I got far less meaningless contact via messages and winks, and much more respectful and appropriate interactions, like interesting questions asking me to expand on what I had written and invites to dinner.

I have felt so much more empowered by my profile as I feel it is more authentic, true to me and does genuinely seem to be attracting like-minded men which is amazing!

It is early days for me, and yet I wanted to say an enormous thank you to Dave for this fabulous book! I highly recommend it to men and women who are wanting to get clear about what they want and then find a way to present that in a way that the opposite sex will find interesting! I know I am in a far better position to find the right person by being clear and being able to present that clarity!

I had success within 3 hours!

So a number of months ago I decided to venture into the world of eHarmony. I've been on it now for about 3 mths and it's fair to say my results have been extremely poor! No dates, really I've just been trying to get someone to have a conversation with me. So this weekend I was going through creating a relationship vision for myself and came across your book. I downloaded it and worked through it all yesterday. I have to say, great book. It's given me so much confidence to attack my profile and not be scared of it! It is the first book I've ever read in one sitting, so co udos to you! I had a friend read my profile awhile ago and she said to me "ooh, it's very specific...perhaps you should change it". So I did. The results have been no better, but I realise that I'd marketed my brand poorly.

I've just completed the upload of my new content and love the way it portrays exactly who I am and what I am looking for. I've included my velvet rope and I think that will help stop the time wasters and give me real prospects. Your book helped me realise that being proud of who you are and conveying your message to others in a special way is ok, and in fact necessary, if you want to have a passionate and loving relationship. I've realised, as Les Brown says, there are plenty of pigeons out there, but I'm searching for eagles and they're rare, so don't be afraid to be who you are and ask for. Bottom line, I thoroughly recommend this book, 6 stars!!

This is an AWESOME Book!!

This is a truly FANTASTIC BOOK that can save you years of frustration and disappointment!!! I wasted hours and hours writing and rewriting my profile with minimal results (and I’m a very good writer). As a very successful lawyer I thought I could write a great profile on my own and people would be waiting in line for me. Unfortunately I was dead wrong! Fortunately, by carefully following the great practical and very straightforward recommendations in this book – such as “painting a picture of the future” (this was incredibly successful), effectively using “my Velvet Rope,” “generating Curiosity,” using “my UPS,” identifying my “target market,” etc., my new profile generated WONDERFUL responses with the result that I’m now in a great AUTHENTIC relationship with a wonderful woman! And it didn’t take long once my profile was redone using Dave’s suggestions! In reading the book I was shocked to see how I was sending the wrong (and inaccurate) messages in my original profile. The simple truth is that following the recommendations in this book has saved me years of discouragement. My strong recommendation: get this book, carefully follow Dave’s practical steps, and make your dating life much better right now!!!

A Great Book on Understanding Telekinesis

Telekinesis is a great read and the second book in the Psychic Awakening series by Embrosewyn Tazkuvel. The author is a gifted storyteller and his personal experiences and journey are captivating and give some nice insight into focusing. Telekinesis has a dubious history and there is a lot of distortion and misunderstanding. Not to mention all the science fiction books and movies that can distort everything behind it. Here the author steps back and delves into the history of telekinesis and the more modern day term, psychokinesis. I really like how he breaks all of this down, very helpful for anyone that wants a better look and understanding to all that’s behind this mysterious phenomenon and ability. I can understand and agree that a person’s auric field is what is at the heart of any manifesting. Now, one of the best parts of the book, is how much time is spent on the different exercises and experiments that are here to help you practice and expand your abilities.

Very informative book on Telekinesis

I am always interested in Telekinesis for a while and I am impressed with what I read in this book. Only someone like the author who has extensive experience in Telekinesis can give practical and realstic advice. This book is easy to read as the author managed to organise them in a logical manner.

The author uses simple and very readable language to explain the concepts and exercises. I just started on the basic Telekinesis exercise and will work on the more advanced exercises soon. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Telekinesis

An interesting read!

This author does an excellent job of describing events that have happened to him and others pertaining to telekinesis. He also gives an outstanding explanation of what it actually is and how it works. I believe that anyone that is interested in harnessing this ability should take the time to read this fantastic book and learn from someone who has actually had these experiences himself. Thank you Mr. Tazkuvel I found it very informative.

About the Author

Alonso Pena, Ph.D.

Alonso Pena, Ph.D. is an SDA Professor at the SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan. He has worked as a quantitative analyst in the structured products group for Thomson Reuters Risk and for Unicredit Group in London and Milan. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Cambridge on Finite Element Analysis and the Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF) from 7city Learning, the U.K. He has lectured and supervised graduate and post-graduate students from the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Bocconi, Bergamo, Pavia, Castellanza, and the Politecnico di Milano. His area of expertise is the pricing of financial derivatives, in particular, structured products. He has publications in the fields of Quantitative Finance, applied mathematics, neuroscience, and the history of science. He has been awarded the Robert J. Melosh Medal—first prize for the best student paper on Finite Element Analysis, Duke University, USA; and the Rouse Ball Travelling Studentship in Mathematics, Trinity College, Cambridge. He has been to the Santa Fe Institute, USA, to study complex systems in social sciences. Needs thorough upgrade - not value for money

The book arrived in very good condition and one day before the seller promised. Unfortunately that's all that I can say was good about buying this book.
Apart from Preface, Index, Bibliography and Appendix, the book has only 96 pages. Within that, following topics are covered:
1. Financial Models - Derivatives of equity, exchange rate, interest rate and credit rating
2. Numerical Methods - Monte Carlo, Finite Difference Method and Binomial Tree
3. Code - covers models in #1 solved with MC and FDM only.
So the content itself is pretty light. But even within that, other issues persist:
1. References are a big issue. For example, Euler-Murayama discretization model is mentioned in multiple derivations, without mentioning any reference for understanding what is it or study it further. Another example - Vasicek model is mentioned during IRS without reference to any text.
2. There is no explanation or reason provided as to why a certain numerical model (like MC) is preferred over others (like FDM)
3. Typos exist in multiple pages
4. Fonts for formulas are inconsistent in size. They become large and then come back to normal size. Examples page 23, 24, 47, 90
5. For some concepts explanations are provided a few pages AFTER the concepts are introduced.

If this is to be regarded as an ADVANCED book in QF, then the above mentioned have to be corrected and the content enriched to make it value for money.

Don't buy it

I don't know why this book has many positive reviews... I brought the book but it turned out a waste of money. The book is NOT "advanced". It covers some not-so-detailed simple pricing with some silly C++ coding.

Quant programming explained the way it should be

Love the Bento box approach, simply genius. I have found uses for this model is other aspects of my work. The quality of c++ code could be better. But all in all this is a must have to programmers looking to make an impression in the quant world.

Excellent travel book - ticket prices would be nice.

Just spent 10 days in Florence with a few day trips. This book covered everything we wanted to do. The maps are great and very easy to follow. The only negative is the little icon showing if a museum or activity has a fee but doesn't tell you the cost. I assume it's because ticket prices change but it would be nice to know if the entry fee was 3 Euro or 12 Euro. Would also be nice if there was a recommendation regarding booking ahead ie. the secret routes tour in the Ponte Vecchio. There was a three day wait in the middle of the week in October so I can't imagine you could take this tour if you didn't book ahead in the summer.

Great choice

Most guidebooks are densely-packed with a lot of semi-useful information in a difficult to use format, but the eyewitness books are the exception to the rule. This book (and the series) are my favorite travel guides because they make it interesting and engaging to learn about where I am visiting and how best to see the sites: the most historically significant places, and why they are interesting, unique, and important. -As opposed to getting recommendations on so-called "locals only" restaurants, etc... that always end up just catering to tourists with the same guidebook. We used this guidebook for a trip around Florence, Sienna, and Lucca, and it was great reading on the trains between locations, and small enough to carry around. It was a little annoying to try to match restaurant and bar listing to the maps in the book, so we relied on phone apps and recommendations from our hotel, but despite this shortcoming, I still won't go back to using other guidebooks.

Best guidebook!

The clear maps, tidbits of information and suggestions were an important part of our daily planning during our nine day stay in Tuscany. As our own tour guide, we relied on the DK guidebook for suggestions after checking on them with our hotel's concierge. HIGHLY referenced for the day trips to Pisa and Florence, we sometimes read about a location while traveling there on the train. Better than an app downloaded, as we stuck in all the papers picked up during the trip and have that a great reminder of our fabulous trip. Well worth the investment!

Ended up costing me more than it's worth

The book was in great condition, however after buying it I needed a SAMS cengage pass for my class as well. I could've bought the bundle from my school much cheaper than I ended up paying for it on here. Also, the book from the school came with 3 Microsoft office trials and windows 8 trials. I wish I had bought it from the school. I am now lacking the trials and I spent more for it and the pass all together. Not worth it!

Not very happy..

This book will work on my Kindle app for my iPad but will not work on my iPhone or on the Kindle app on my computer. Very disappointing, I would not have bought it if I had know this ahead of time. Not very happy..

Misleading description of my book

It did not meet my expectations. The spiral books was not in the same conditions of what the description stated it would be in. The cover to the book was torn from the spiral and the book was very fragile. I am not satisfied with the book at all.
