The mother of all books about race cars

This is the mother of all books about race cars. If you were missing deep theoretical background on tuning your sports car or street car, this volume is for you. It is impossible to describe in detail what this textbook is about, in a single review.

What I liked most is the chapter on dampers (shock absorbers). It gave me the answers to lots of questions that I had before reading this published work, for example how to choose "ride/handling compromise" when adjusting damping ratio? Why stiffer dampers are more comfortable on large-amplitude bumps, while softer dampers provide smoother ride on small-amplitude bumps? "In an automobile, a suspension is used to reduce the discomfort induced by unevenness in the highway. As measure of discomfort is the vertical acceleration that the passenger is subjected while sitting in the vehicle". The book demonstrates the model where the passenger is linked to the road via three springs in a sequence: tire, coil and the seat, and one damper (shock absorber). There is a graph showing passenger vertical acceleration depending on the amplitude (frequency) of road irregularities, for distinct shock absorbers with various damping ratios. For a stiff shock absorber this diagram shows relatively flat curve, where the vertical acceleration is almost independent of frequency of bumps. For the soft shock absorber, there is a very high peak (several times higher comparing to a stiff damper) of vertical acceleration for the low-frequency bumps, and this acceleration curve quickly decays as the frequency increases. There is another graph, "transient load transfer analysis", which shows that with soft dampers, the suspension load in a turn fluctuates. This is another answer to the question why stiffer dampers (to a certain extent) provide better handling.

The order of the chapters is somewhat sporadic. The books is a mixture of sections of engineering information (formulas), historical background, sketches (e.g. torque arm rear axle suspension), recipes (KONI's published instructions for damper adjustment), and sample data (e.g. Goodyear tire data). Nevertheless, the work is so deep that in a couple of years after it's publication, it had been started being used as a university textbook. Based on comments from faculty, SAE have requested the authors to prepare a supplementary book of problems, to help the universities to examine the students.

Gives a complete statement of race car dynamics

This book is a necessity for anyone who is seriously interested in understanding what happens concerning all aspects of the car. Whether mechanic, engineer, or general fan this book says it all. If you really want to understand the book completely, I would recommend at least a brush up in Calculus, and some trig.

the best book out there for race car design topics

I am a mechanical engineer. I am very into my hobby of race cars. I have a stack of books on chassis, suspnsion and overall race car design. This book is by far the best and most comprehensive of them all. I have benefited more from this book than any of the others. I will def be purchasing the work book to go along with this.

Gregory P. Marchildon is a Canada Research Chair in Public Policy and Economic History at the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Regina. Delay is not Denial

This book challenged my perceptions in several areas. Repeatedly, the life approach taken by the wealthy is the exact opposite from those who are not. An example is the topic of interest. The wealthy strive to EARN interest,whereas others are content with expectations to PAY interest. There are several other instances the author highlights that when followed may reduce debt and possibly create passive income. It appears the author is a Christian through repetitive Bible references. His use of verses serve well to illustrate and punctuate his narratives. Easy to read and practical.

About the Author

Joseph Mayo practices architecture in the Pacific Northwest where he concentrates on materiality, technology and form for a regionally appropriate building culture. He has worked on a variety of building types, ranging from schools, student housing, university buildings and hospitals. Working with a City of Seattle Department of Planning and Development (DPD) Advisory Committee, Joseph led an investigation to use wood in applications that go beyond current building codes. He has also been a jury member for wood design awards, served as Regional Associate Director for the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Young Architect Forum (YAF) Chair at AIA Seattle, and has assisted in teaching courses and served on architecture critiques at universities around the Pacific Northwest.

A comprehensive global tour of wood building systems.

Mayo's attempt to weave case studies of wood building systems from every corner of the world is astoundingly successful in convincing the architectural world of the approach's modernity and validity. He considers not just the environmental implications of the methods, but also the building code challenges, fire safety, structural considerations, and other critical topics in his analysis.

This book should be required-reading in any course on modern structural concepts or construction materials for architects and engineers.

Revived interest in wood construction

By boring deep into modern wood construction techniques, Joseph's Solid Wood piqued my interest as an opportunity to revisit architecture studies that I had enjoyed years ago during college classes. Joseph promptly covers critical issues of fire safety and moisture control as well as relevant terminology before moving on to several chapters of massive wood construction projects around the globe. Case studies in Norwegian Wood, budding United Kingdom housing developments, and Australia's timber down under all plant insight in the reader using ample construction photos and diagrams of project-specific techniques.

I worried this book would be overly technical when I placed a pre-order months ago; however, after receiving the book, I'm delighted to find the content appropriate for both a high level architecture class or a casual coffee table construction photo tome to thumb through.

The best book on IFRS

I purchased the two editions of this book. The first edition was acquired at the time of taking examination of certificate course on IFRS conducted by The Charterd Accountants of India almost 5 years ago. I got through the examination successfully in first attempt with good score.This book has all required content on IFRS for the practicing public accountants and also those who are in the industry. The professional accountants should keep this book always in their libraries for ready reference. I am also a practicing Chartered Accountant in the city of Hyderabad,India and I recommend this Bible to all those professional accountants and others in industry as ready reference,

The latest edition has been acquired to keep my knowledge on IFRS up to date.

Good companion for students

I'm an ACCA student attempting one of the Financial reporting papers and this IFRS Guide book is a really good companion to the study texts. It hightlights the basic principles underlying each standard, written in easy to understand english and the many cases and MCQs really help in understanding how/when to apply the standards. Not sure it may be good help to professionals who may need more indepth examples for complicated application issues but I will definitely recommend to every student sitting exams which requires knowledge of IASs/IFRSs. It really nails the basics and because not it isn't as lengthly as other material on IASs/IFRSs it will be good for revision.
