Important subject; worthy effort on teaching it.

I just finished reading this book through the kindle edition; it's an important and relevant subject but reading this short book was not easy--it was very boring for me and required a lot of focus and concentration; I still have to go back through and read it again; the picture quality is acceptable but by no means was it good or excellent; if you enlarge the picture more than a little the pixellation overwhelms the clarity of the images; though the book is mostly images there are not nearly ENOUGH images to make you feel confident; the explanations of the photos are poorly marked because the description PRECEDES the letter designation for that particular image (a. b. c. d.). This book could have been so much better with just double the photos and higher quality photos. Considering the high cost of the kindle book (120.00) I feel that a fair price for it would have been more like 80.00 dollars. I do recommend it because it seems like it is the only book on this subject matter available. I don't want to belittle the efforts that probably went into this work nor do I want to seem unthankful that someone decided to write about this important subject. I am thankful to Iris Zalaudek and all the other authors for this contribution but hopefully the next edition will be much better.

158 pages of quality information and photographs actually written about this rare but growing breed. Covers all aspects particular to the breed from puppy to senior years including temperment and traits particular to the Spanish Water Dog. This volume is NOT a cut and paste production built around a template to sell pet products. A previous reviewer expressed a cut and paste impression. Portions of the book on general health care are obviously provided by the publisher for the series which this is volume 332. The author has adhered to an outline yet tailored her writing to give an objective and complete discussion specific for this somewhat unusual medium sized nonshedding herding and working water dog. The only attribute not covered is the interaction of the breed's wooly coat and snow.

A not so comprehensive guide

I was most excited to receive my copy of the SWD Comprehensive Review. While the book is informative with tons of photographs it was too general for my liking. I was expecting it to be written more breed specific in all aspects and to tell me some things I didn't already know. It is almost like the SWD was just plugged into many sections as those pertain to all breeds. The sections on general doggie training and health were just that, general almost everyday information that most dog owners already know or rely upon their vet to take care of for them. If a picture is worth 1,000 words then the pictures in this book must make up the selling price. Other than that, the information was stuff I already knew before falling in love with the breed. I am disappointed.

Generic but better than nothing.

Until this book was published, the only information regarding the breed was written in Spanish. I applaud the authors for their attempt to educate the English-speaking people of the world with regards to this ancient breed. The photos alone are reason to purchase a used copy of this book but when it comes to factual information on the history one should look elsewhere. I hope this book encourages other potential authors to conduct in-depth research by contacting the Association Espanola del Perro de Agua Espanol, the herders and fishermen of Spain before they attempt such a noteworthy undertaking.

Nail biting suspense!

What is the cure for a damaged hero who is also handsome, super sexy, and oh so alpha? Well, according to author, Cindy Gerard, the answer is quite simple: a good woman. Hokey? Perhaps, but hey people this is romantic fiction, and Ms. Gerard's theory always provides a great adventure, and I love tagging along!

Directly after Carrie Granger arrived in the third-world country that she traveled to in order to help set up a dialysis program, she disappeared without a trace. Her childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Wyatt Savage (from Gerard's Risk No Secrets) is worried sick. He calls his buddy David Cavanaugh, CAV, to find her--quickly! And find her he does--as a slave laborer in the mountains surrounded by thick jungles under the guard of brutal captors who are mining rubies.

CAV pulls every string he's got to infiltrate the mining camp as a greedy American investor, but can he pull-off this op alone? More importantly, can he get around his own demons of alcoholism to return Carrie home safely? Oh yeah, and one more thing--he falls in love with her--isn't it all complicated enough?

Cindy Gerard knows how to write a romance filled with nail-biting suspense. I loved every moment of delicious trepidation that Gerard so masterfully weaved into this story. I loved her Black Ops series and was delighted when she revisited it to provide this wonderful novella. Thank you Ms. Gerard!

Hot and fast!

This is a short story that manages to be a complete story despite it's length-or lack thereof. I really enjoyed the H/H and the chemistry they had. The heroine was tough and determined and a survivor. The hero was a burned out CIA guy who does the right thing by our heroine and rescues her. Complete with a requisite happy ending after pages of breathtaking action and suspense, this one is short, sweet and amazingly complete.

Book #7, actually a novella

My first complaint is, this really could've been a full-length book. My 2nd is, we didn't really get to know either of these people very well in previous books(they were both only briefly in one other book each), and it was hard to know to get to know them in this short amount of time. I think with a longer book, I would've definitely given it 4 stars. As it stands though, with how short it was, the progression of Cav and Carrie's relationship was unsettling vs hot and steamy. I mean really? She's beaten and starved with bruises and sores and they're all over each other that quick? There's the usual angst (his) and the typical political corruption plot. Also, it's not necessary to read this one to follow the next (and last) book. The BOI's are very briefly in this one, but you wouldn't have needed to read the other 6 books to follow anything in this one. Bottom line: at 99 cents or free I'd say go for it. But at $2 I'd say skip it.

A More Objective Review

Considering the only other review for this book currently available, I felt compelled to write a review that is actually about the book, not the subject of the book. A Harvard professor deserves at least that. Perry Miller's classic introduction to the New England Puritans remains an essential text for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of a much maligned and often misunderstood religious movement. An understanding of the New England Puritans is absolutely essential to an understanding of American History and American society. Miller does not espouse the doctrines of Puritanism; he provides a concise and helpful historical background and then guides the reader through some representative samples of their writing. This is not a book designed to convert someone to Puritanism. A sidenote: The Puritans referred to in this book have not existed for centuries, so I assure you no reviewer of this book actually left the Puritanism described in this book.

Learning Italian

I have a hard copy of this book and found it very helpful, but traveling and carrying a tonne of books is difficult. That is why I decided to get this version for my ipad. I am really enjoying the expanded version and it is great to have it just on the ipad. This is actually the first ebook so I am just getting used to the format.

Grade 4 Up?Paulsen reveals bits and pieces of his own life story through his experiences with eight of his dogs. After a heartfelt dedication to Cookie, the sled dog who saved his life, the author introduces readers first to Snowball, the puppy he acquired when he was seven years old and living in the Philippines, and then follows chronologically with profiles of other canine companions. He concludes with tales about Josh, the border collie with whom he currently shares a home. Paulsen is a master storyteller with a dry wit. His description of his dog Fred, whom he claimed was actually "nuclear in his capacity for destruction," and his account of his Great Dane Caesar, who was so petrified of trick-or-treaters that he would hide in the bedroom closet every Halloween with a housecoat over his eyes, are sure to elicit smiles. Paulsen can also make readers sigh when he relates how Snowball saved him from being bitten by a poisonous snake and how Cookie pulled him out of the water when he fell through the ice while trapping beaver. The statement, "Josh...is a person. I do not think in my heart that he is a dog," gives youngsters a real sense of how the man looks at these animals. An attractive pen-and-ink sketch of the profiled animal opens each chapter. Paulsen's style has been smoother, but this honest, unpretentious celebration of dogs further entrenches his reputation as an author who is as successful at writing nonfiction as he is at writing novels. In roughly chronological chapters, he introduces eight memorable canines he has known and loved over the years. Some were pets, others he knew as trusted partners or protectors--from Snowball, the first, to Josh, who "if possible . . . is always with me." Although the chapters are linked by small details and references (often easy to recognize from his previous books), each can stand alone, with several, including a wildly funny one devoted to an adopted Great Dane named Caesar, promising good read-aloud material. Paulsen differentiates his canine friends beautifully, as only a keen observer and lover of dogs can. At the same time, he presents an intimate glimpse of himself, a lonely child of alcoholic parents, who drew strength and solace from his four-legged companions and a love of the great outdoors. Poignant but never saccharine, honest, and open, these engaging canine character studies are guaranteed to charm animal lovers and Paulsen's fans, especially those who know Woodsong (1990) or Father Water, Mother Woods (1994). Paulsen paid loving tribute to the sled dogs in his life in Puppies, Dogs and Blue Northers (1996) so gives eight more canine companions equal time: Snowball, who saved his life when he was seven, to Caesar, an enthusiastic Great Dane who ``overwhelmed the furniture'' but was gentle with children, to Fred, who did battle with an electric fence, to Quincy, who did battle with a bear that attacked the author's wife. Brought tears to my eyes

This is such a great book. I am a substitute teacher and one day the fifth grade class was doing a lot of quiet independent work, so I picked up this book from the teacher's desk . It's not a long book so I was able to get through a lot of it. Each chapter is a story about one of the author's dogs throughout his life, whether he owned the dog or maybe just had a short encounter with one.
I immediately scanned it into my amazon cart to buy for my son. I am not a dog lover by any means and this book made me want to run out and get one. It is so heartwarming and real. - great book for all ages!

Gary Paulsen is one of our most talented fiction writers of today. You get riveted from the very first page of every book he has written. This is especially true with his Hatchet book and all the other books that follow Brian's story of living and surviving alone in the wilderness of Minnesota and Canada. His "Life in Dog Years" recaptures his relationships with the dogs in his life. I can relate to his love of dogs (and all animals) their different personalities and how they each came into Gary's life and what role they played. Highly recommended.

My ten year old daughter wanted a book about dogs: this one is perfect. Humorous, insightful, short stories into the lives of a few dogs in Paulsens life. Perfect book for her.
