Hooked from the first page

A really great read! Picked up this book and didn't put it down until I was finished. Absolutely gripping, I found it was easy to relate to the characters, giving the book a really personal edge, which kept me hooked in the story line. The climax of the book is perfectly executed and the following scenes expertly crafted. This book is really emotionally engaging, with the whole spectrum of emotions being touched on. Really great!

I loved the flow of this book, the author sets the scene very quickly of a group of young people, free from personal responsibility committing themselves to recording a 3 month long rampage of debauched hedonism. A vivid and realistic picture of a life lived to excess and the resultant damage is painted against the background of a disjointed post conflict society.

Yummy Goodness

This book is simply yummy goodness. I am a huge fan of the Lyric Hounds and was super excited to see book three was released. Not only do we get to see some old favorites and how they are doing , but we get to learn more about both Karlan and Sav. Madam Eve works her magic once again as she helps connect two true mates who, due to an event from their past, some stubbornness, and a bit of fear were not yet at their HEA. I can not wait to see what Mina has in store for the Lyric Hounds in the future. While this can be read as a stand alone, I highly recommend reading them all because they are all yummy goodness.

Trent Savage, Sav, is the drummer in Lyric Hound, a very popular band, consisting of Werewolf musicians. For as long as he can remember he’s been attracted to Karlan Rixx, the band’s guitarist. What’s more, for years he has known that Karlan is his preordained mate. Karlan however is as straight as they come and, as far as Sav can tell, completely unaware of or ignoring Sav’s feelings as well as the bond between them.

After years of trying to deny his feelings just to hold on to Karlan’s friendship, Sav can’t take it anymore and leaves the band as well as the only life and family he’s ever known.

Karlan may be a womanizer, in his heart there is only one person he’s interested in. When Sav disappears Karlan feels lost. The band isn’t the same with Sav to drive the beat and Karlan’s life is incomplete without the man behind him on stage, next to him in life.

When he discovers that Sav has contacted Madame Eve to organize a one night stand, Karlan does what he can to be Sav’s date. There was a reason Karlan didn’t know he and Sav were mated. With Karlan’s problem solved both man are in for a few surprises when they meet again. But will it be enough for them to embrace their destiny?

Allow me to start with a few qualifiers. I’ve never read a One Night Stand or Lyric Hound story before. I don’t read a lot of supernatural stories, erotic or otherwise and, I very often find myself having issues with novellas. For all intents and purposes requesting this book for review seemed to be an exercise in setting myself up for failure.

Imagine how happily surprised I was to discover that being new to the One Night Stand series and Lyric Hound stories didn’t make a difference. I fell into and was captured by this story from the very first word and stayed hooked until I’d finished the last one. What’s not too like? We’re meeting Sav, a sexy and dominant werewolf rock star who, despite his rough exterior is breaking up inside because his mate appears to be rejecting him. And, not only do we get to enjoy this hunk, we’re also treated to Karlan, and equally hot werewolf. The reader is being spoiled.

Talking about werewolves; I’ve obviously been missing something while ignoring supernatural (erotic) stories. If this story sets the standard, this is a discrepancy I’ll be fixing in the not too distant future, very likely starting with the other Lyric Hound stories.

As far as the fact that this is a novella rather than a full novel is concerned all I can say is that I was very impressed. This was as complete a story as any reader can wish for. The characters are well described and fully fleshed, there’s enough back story to give the reader not only everything they need to know but also a real connection to the character’s feelings and actions. This story may only have counted 35 pages, it provided everything a good story needs: a beginning that puts the reader straight into the story, a middle that provided all the explanations needed without slowing the story down and a beautiful and very satisfying ending.

And did I mention this story is hot? Well, it is. But then, that’s exactly what you would expect when you pick up a story about two Alpha werewolves giving in to their feelings for each other after years of having to deny then.

This in short was about an hour’s worth of pure reading delight, leaving me with yet another author I have to add to my must-read list.

This book aims to explain SQL Server In-Memory OLTP, which can dramatically improve performance, how does it fare?

In-Memory OLTP is the primary reason to migrate to SQL Server 2014. Under the right conditions it can offer significant performance benefits, with code typically running 20 to 40 times faster.

This book is targeted at SQL Server developers and architects wanting to know how to take advantage of the potential performance improvements. Some background knowledge of SQL Server, especially performance, will be useful.

This is a single topic book, having 11 chapters and 4 short appendices, contained within around 240 working pages.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Why In-Memory OLTP?

The chapter opens with a look at the background of In-Memory OLTP. Historically, memory was expensive, it made sense to store data on disks and bring it into memory for processing. With the advent of much cheaper memory, a different processing model could be used. In-Memory OLTP was designed for scalable fast processing. The design resulted in In-Memory structures, a concurrency model that eliminates locks and latches, and natively compiled stored procedures that use significantly fewer CPU cycles – all of which can significantly improve performance.

Additionally, In-Memory OLTP is integrated seamlessly with other SQL Server 2014 components, there is no need for system refactoring – this is a major advantage when compared with other database vendors. There are some limitations, but you can expect these to reduce with future versions of SQL Server.

The chapter continues with a look at In-Memory OLTP architecture. While In-Memory objects are fully integrated into SQL Server, and can be used transparently, internally they are different. The objects are stored in memory, they live outside the buffer pool, and have different structures compared with on-disk structures. Classic (i.e. interpreted) SQL can access In-Memory tables via interop, and this is typically 2 to 4 times faster than accessing the corresponding on-disk table. Natively compiled stored procedures can only access In-Memory tables, and are typically much faster than using interpreted SQL.

This chapter provides a useful overview of how In-Memory OLTP arose, together with its major components.

The best memoir of anorexia i have read thus far

This has to be my ultimate favorite memoir of a young woman's gripping battle with anorexia. It has been weeks since I read this book, but I wanted to give me some space between reading it at writing my review. The author's writing style is unique and creative. She at times writes in third person as well as first person and at other times she even stops the story to interject very honest and helpful explainations. Her ability to describe her inner thoughts and conflicts at the same time as painting a picture of her outside interactions and experiences is amazing and very important.
To be honest, I cannot say enough good things about this book to accurately explain how enraptured I am about it. I think it is written in an extraordinary poignant way to the point of being one of the most important memoir's in the field of eating disorder literature. Ms. Bowman has captured what it is like to be consumed by an eating disorder and at the same time try to navigate in the world and attempt to interact with your loved ones, doctors, acquantances, and society as a whole all while trying your hardest to hide your inside thoughts, feelings and reasons for your disturbing behavior.
I would never have imagined someone writing such a gripping and accurate portrayal of having a severe eating disorder and what it is like inside the mind of the sufferer and outside trying to live in a world that refuses not to be judgemental. Ms. Bowman captures somewhat it is I am trying to say on page 240 of her book, "That is the odd thing about anorexia: it is seen to vanish when the body is mended. It moves from body-side to inside, and perhaps it is more dangerous when it cannot be seen."
Ms. Bowman is a remarkable and talented young woman. I am honored to have had the experience to read her story and read her thoughts. I highly recommend this book and give thanks to such a tenacious young woman for writing it.
I do think that it is important to note that Ms. Bowman has a very different recovery story than those who have spent many years in the grips of an eating disorder. This is not to compare the suffering of anybody. I just think that her recovery without ever being hospitalized is noteworthy because her quicker recovery than some might be hard to relate to for those who are more chronic.

I just didn't get it at all...

Yes, this is a story of a young woman battling an eating disorder. I think...she talks about wanting to be thin, restricting her intake, her diagnosis and then she is recovered because she decided she no longer wanted to be anorexic.

I think this account is a somewhat dangerous view of anorexia. She does not go into what her treatment plan really was; what her therapy sessions really entailed; or what really made her to get well. She says she "got bored" with it and just decided to stop.

Eating disorders are an illness. It baffles me when I hear of young, naive, girls saying they wish they could be anorexic, or bulimic, or whatever...it doesn't work that way. One does not really make a conscious choice to fall deep into the throws of anorexia. It is a painful, disturbing place to be.

Likewise, I find it very difficult that one can just say "I'm bored of anorexia. I think I'll stop now."

I am very sure there is much more to Ms. Bowma's story than that. There has to be. But this book fails to go into the real emotions and feelings that haunt a person with an eating disorder. If you want a read that truly goes into the nitty-gritty of these disorders I would recommend "Wasted" by Marya Hornbacher.

As a recovering anorexic, I wish I could have just said "I don't feel like doing this anymore." and POOF! It was over. Unfortunately for me, and most anorexics, that doesn't happen. Maybe most of us are not as emotionally strong as this woman, but going through recovery with little or no professional help, I believ, is very dangerous. I think it is an irresponsible story to tell...to imply to people with eating disorders, "hey, just stop doing it. It's that simple." is a very dangerous implication. It took years of therapy and emotional healing to get to where I am today with my illness. I consider myself fully recovered, but there is always that haunting image that follows me. and there is no way I could have done it without the help of a team of experienced professionals. Yes, Ms. Bowman does suggest to seek help, but her overall tone of the book is that she did not need it. She was strong enough to do it on her own. Good for her, but I have a hard time swallowing that. This book just didn't seem to portray the real emotion and heartache that one would go through in such a situation.

More than the content being vague and lacking emotion, I found the writing style confusing and somewhat annoying. The author jumps from one tense to another and I was frequently lost as to what stage of her disorder or recovery, or even her life, that she was in.

I wouldn't recommend it.

An extremely powerful memoir by a courageous woman...

"Thin" is a memoir about a woman suffering from anorexia nervosa. Unlike so many other memoirs or autobiographies on the subject, Ms. Bowman doesn't glorify or glamorize this disease. She writes with an unflinching style, much like Marya Hornbacher did with her infamous "Wasted," and perhaps gives the reader an even deeper insight (than Hornbacher did) into what goes on in the mind of an anorexic. I found myself unable to put this book down. It is also a book filled with hope. Ms. Bowman "found" a cure (or at least a way to cope) within herself, and despite seeing several professionals in the mental health field, made the ultimate decision to go it alone and I absolutely applaud her bravery. There is one caution I would give about the memoir, and that is its 'triggering' nature...but I believe ANY memoir that is honest is going to be triggering to the eating disordered population. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to understand anorexia, and absolutely recommend it to the "experts." (Though the experts are typically too wrapped up in their own egos to take advice from one who is suffering, even one as insightful as Ms. Bowman.) Also, I must take issue with the title of the book, which is too trite and meaningless for the content. I see that the original was called "A Shape of My Own" which is much more apt, and I wonder if Ms. Bowman had anything to do with the change--my guess would be that she did not. I applaud you, Ms. Bowman, and want you to know your book touched me in ways I cannot express.

About the Author
Dean R. Snow is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Penn State University. He is an archaeologist who specializes in ethnohistoric and demographic problems. In recent years his work has led him into Geographic Information Systems (GIS) approaches to these issues. He has conducted research in Mexico and in the northeastern region of North America, where his work on the Iroquois is particularly well known. His current research includes cyberinfrastructure and the development of large GIS databases designed to explore large-scale population movements over time and space. He is also currently researching the sexual dimorphism of human handprints and hand stencils in the Upper Paleolithic caves of France and Spain.
