About the Author

Jason Corey is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Performing Arts Technology at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, where he teaches courses in sound recording, technical ear training, and musical acoustics. As an active recording, mixing, and editing engineer, he works across a range of musical genres including jazz, classical and contemporary art music, and experimental electronic music. He is author of numerous publications on topics such as technical ear training, multichannel audio, and spatial audio perception. He has served as Governor of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) from 2013 to 2015 and is currently the AES Vice-President for the Central Region, USA/Canada.

David H. Benson is a software developer and audio researcher who is currently completing a Ph.D in Sound Recording at McGill University. His research has been supported by the Quebec government’s Fund for Research on Society and Culture (FQRSC) and the Audio Engineering Society Educational Foundation (AESEF). In 2011 he was named the AESEF’s John Eargle scholar, an honor recognizing excellence in both technology and music. As a pedagogue, he was granted the Schulich School of Music’s first Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.

This book assesses the quality of democracy in Poland from the collapse of communism in 1989 up to the 2011 parliamentary election. It presents an in-depth, empirically grounded study comparing two decades of democratic politics. Drawing on democratic theory and comparative politics, the book puts forward an evaluation of democracy based on four dimensions: representation, participation, competition and accountability. The book is an important contribution to debates on the performance of the new democracies in Central and Eastern Europe, where some scholars argue that there is a ‘democratic crisis’, that, after a period of democratic progress, most of these countries are experiencing democratic fatigue and that their democratic performance is poor. However, the Polish case shows that democracy is not in crisis - in fact, the quality of democracy in Poland has improved. The book shows that democratic quality stems from good democratic institutions. Moreover, the Polish case shows useful lessons that can be learnt by democratic reformers in countries that are undergoing the transition to democracy or are aiming to consolidate their democratic systems. It concludes that effective accountability, good representation and stable competition are vital.

Not Tomie DePaola's best, but still very good

This book was not the full quality that I have come to expect from Tommie DePaola. Nonetheless, my children responded well to it. By four year old gave it five stars (though she only does five or one). The illustrations do not seem to be up to Tommie's usual standard, although as always the colors are wonderful. The story line is very simple but sweet, several birds tell one another about certain events they had seen that all center upon the birth of Jesus. That they then go visit the baby Jesus send a subtle message about the way in which the message is for "all creatures great and small."

An interesting aspect of the book is that it does not say anything explicitly about Jesus as the "son of God" or about the virgin birth, nor does it say anything against them. As a result, in addition to being a very nice way to introduce Christian children to the story of Jesus, or to remind them of it and reflect upon it, this book could also be used to help non-Christian children understand some aspects of the story of Jesus.

Still, I do not think that this is Tommie's best work and it probably would not have been picked up by a publisher if his name was not attached to it. It falls far short of such classics as The Clown of God and My First Legends: The Story of Bluebonnet. For a beautiful book that has birds and a spiritual message, one could also buy The Conference of the Birds, illustrated by Demi, another children's book legend.

Not What I Expect from dePaola

We are all big fans of Tomie dePaola in this house, but we were very disappointed in this book. The story line was...non-existent, and ended abruptly, and the illustrations were so far different from his usual style, I would say someone else altogether had made them. Wish I hadn't pre-ordered it!

This book has cute illustrations. but it is my least favorite Tomie dePaola book to date. I bought this for my nephew and I hope he is less disappointed than I was. It is very short, both the number of pages and the amount of writing on each page. I got this for a child who is nearly three, I would not recommend it for any child over that age. If you want a more religious dePaula book I would highly recommend his book of Children's bible stories, in it he uses the actual text of the NIV Bible and cites which verses he uses for all stories in the back of the book.
