Not what I expected

While I believe I learned a few good ideas from reading this book, It is definitely not a "guide" I would recommend to others. The author occasionally shares opinions (for example on the importance of speed) but most of the book seems occupied with laundry-lists of ways you can do things (often repeated without much detail) where I would have liked to see more real guidelines recommending one way above another. The book particularly emphasizes "qualifications" meaning expertise (training, experience) - ok, fine, but then you don't need to repeat it 50 times. And the examples provided - largely from scientific literature or the recent financial collapse, don't seem very directly applicable to anything I'm interested in. I realize when you're addressing a cross-industry audience you won't catch everyone's fancy so maybe it really works for other people. It was not what I was expecting though.

Falls somewhat short of its goal

The purpose of this book is to provide advice on how to set up a business analytics infrastructure in a corporation. Among other things, the author describes various roles that exist in a fully developed analytics team:“business quants” possess an advanced degree in a quantitative discipline and work mostly with data performing quantitative modeling. “Expert leaders” are experienced business quants who lead analytics projects. “Ordinary managers of analytics” have formal authority to manage business quants, but they don't have much of quantitative training. This book is mostly addressed to the expert leaders, ordinary managers, and similar individuals who either have or are interested in acquiring leadership and managerial responsibilities in the business analytics area.

While reading, I had a distinct feeling that the author is very experienced and knowledgeable, but for some reason he decided to share his expertise in a manner that made the book far less useful than it could have been. Most of the time he dispenses advice in way too general terms, with few specific examples from the industry. “There are countless examples of corporations that closed their doors or were severely impacted by a single poor decision, let alone a series of them” - says the author on p 138. I was excited when I reached it, thinking that he eventually decided to share some of those anecdotes in detail, but to no avail. If only the book had contained 5-10 more of such examples, it would have been far more effective in reaching its goal; in addition, it would have appealed to a far broader subset of analytics professionals, including business quants.

Great book for those working as a business analyst / manager / leader

This book gives real world insights of how business analytics plays out in the real world. It walks through the basics of managing data and analytics best practices. The author makes a strong case for the business need for analytics, some of which I will shamelessly borrow to justify my own internal analytics project :-) I also enjoyed the writing style of Mr. Bartlett. he kept it as light and easy as possible. The footnotes were particularly funny.

This book is not academic, full of boring equations. However, if you work in or lead a real world analytics group, and you work in a typical company (with its typical data / analytics shortcomings), this book will help you understand the opportunities and start toward realizing them

About the Author
HARVEY A. LEVINE has been a project management professional for thirty-nine years, providing applications, system design, and consulting services in project planning and control, mostly with General Electric. In 1986, Levine founded the Project Knowledge Group, a consulting firm specializing in project management training; project management software selection, evaluation, and implementation; and project management using computers. What did you think when you were first told "Do unto others as you would have them to do unto you"? Did you dismiss it as quaint religious allegory? Did you think of it as a childhood platitude? Did you poke fun at it wondering how to treat a criminal, a cruel person, or a toddler? Or perhaps you embraced it as profound advice on how to treat others.

Harry Gensler understands the Golden Rule. On December 6, 1968 he heard R.M. Hare give a talk on the Golden Rule (GR) and immediately became a GR junkie. He wrote his doctoral dissertation on the Golden Rule in 1977. He recently devoted a sabbatical from his position as Professor of Philosophy at John Carroll University to write this book on the Golden Rule. The logical discipline of a philosophy professor combines with the passion fueling a life-long fascination with GR to provide this easy to read yet rigorous and authoritative treatment of the topic. To make the book accessible and appealing to readers ranging from the most casual to the most skeptical, he provides two alternative introductory chapters. Chapter 1 is the simpler introduction, and Chapter 2 provides a longer and more technical alternative.

The Golden Rule presents a paradox. Although GR principles are endorsed by each of the major religions; it is easy to give examples where applying GR literally leads to ridiculous outcomes. The introductory chapters directly address this paradox. The heart of GR is switching places. Also, GR is actually a theorem derived from two more basic consistency principles: impartiality and conscientious adherence to your own moral beliefs. These ideas are combined to create a precise new phrasing of GR:

"Treat others only as you consent to being treated in the same situation."

With this understanding, GR is transformed from a vague platitude into a precise consistency test. Several fallacies used to dispute GR are identified, analyzed, and dismissed in the first two chapters. He defends GR against 27 further objections in the final chapter.

To help us apply GR he introduces the mnemonic device "Kita":

+ Know: "How would my action affect others?"
+ Imagine: "What would it be like to have this done to me in the same situation?"
+ Test for Consistency: "Am I now willing that if I were in the same situation then this be done to me?"
+ Act toward others only as you're willing to be treated in the same situation.

This analysis is applied to examples throughout the book.

The role of GR in the world's major religions, including atheism and interfaith activities, is examined in Chapter 3. A Socratic Dialogue probes the wisdom of the GR in Chapter 4, and in Chapter 5 a remarkably detailed chronology traces GR's role from assisting prehistoric hunters, to opposing slavery and racism, through frequent appeals by religious and political activists, and its application in modern institutions.

Part 3 of the book puts GR into practice. The chapter on Moral Education provides useful advice on teaching and applying GR to our everyday lives. It addresses GR and moral development, provides a method for developing rational moral thinking, and includes practical suggestions for integrating GR teaching into existing programs. The question "Why is GR not succeeding?" is then addressed. Other chapters explore the philosophies of Egoism, Hobbs, and Darwin in the context of GR, and demonstrate the power of GR in overcoming racism and other forms of groupism. The contribution of GR to Applied Ethics for addressing issues in business, healthcare, civil discussion, and other areas is introduced. The scope of GR is clarified as applying to sentient beings by competent, rational agents, and this understanding is used to answer specific questions on the extent of our GR duties. Four areas of special GR urgency--areas where GR can be used now to solve significant problems--are identified as: groupism, family life, treatment of animals, and the environment.

Although the author regards GR very favorably, when asked the question: "Is GR the supreme moral axiom from which all duties can be deduced?" he answers negatively. He positions GR as a consistency principle; it is a guide in selecting and applying moral rules. GR is a theorem, not an axiom. By asking us to switch places, GR provides a counterbalance to humans' self-centered nature. Because GR is counter to human nature, it can be difficult to live by.

The book melds an in-depth technical analysis of the Golden Rule with practical advice on how we can learn it, teach it, and strive to live by it every day. I enjoyed reading this book, and I imagine you will too. Living by the Golden Rule can improve well-being. It is a wise thing to do.

Wide-ranging, thoughtful, enjoyable discussion

This book brings philosophical, religious, and historical perspectives to bear on the Golden Rule. It's an excellent overview, and should be of interest to readers of many different stripes -- one can easily imagine the book being used in college courses on moral philosophy or world religions, for instance, but it's not a mere textbook. Quite the contrary... Just about anyone with even a passing interest in the question "how ought we to treat others?" will find it accessible and worthwhile. Gensler writes in a very engaging style, with lots of humor and very clear examples and illustrations. Highly recommended.

This is the perfect kind of book for an undergraduate course in ethics

This is the perfect kind of book for an undergraduate course in ethics. It starts with a notion that is essentially about fairness, and fairness is a notion that is immediately accessible and intuitively plausible to undergrads. In fact, many of us might even think the golden rule to be so self-evident that it must be trivial. That would be a mistake, for the concept of fairness and fair dealing is not trivial. Harry G gives us in neat orderly fashion the reasoning underlying the golden rule, as well as a sense of how it has appealed to people of virtually all religions and none. It's a work from a master: controlled, balanced, sensible, never over-reaching, incisive, and logical. (Harry G is also one of the best logicians around right now.)
The nature of the golden rule is such that it pushes back boundaries. "Do to others ...." can't coherently be thought of as referring only to one's kin or one's nation. Today we need a global ethic, or the planet may well perish. Let's hope more people, particularly those in power, come to understand that a wise foreign policy would be based on the rule, rather than on a naked ruthlessness; and that they realize that all the people of the planet have to be seen (we will perish otherwise) as one moral community. This book would be a good place to start.

A good insight into Mr.Modi's hugely successful campaign

Just like many others, I was curious to understand how the hugely successfully campaign was carried out by Mr. Modi and the BJP for the 2014 general elections. This book definitely provides a lot of details, obtained from several quarters including party workers at different levels, organisers, ad agencies, TV, print and social media. However, the author was not able to meet with the master strategist Mr. Amith Shah for various reasons. Not that Mr. Shah would have provided much insight into his planning and execution, but we could have got his perspective.

While the entire book is narrated very well and kept me engaged for the most part, there is one incident where I believe the author could have looked elsewhere for information. This is regarding the 2002 Godhra roits. The author’s source of information are the NGO’s/human rights organizations. The issue here is, most of us know the NGO’s were merely there to promote the western interests by painting a negative picture of the Hindus and right wing organizations.

We have heard enough about Hillary Clinton’s “Get Modi” policy and the funding provided to several NGO’s , with the sole purpose of tarnishing Mr. Modi’s image and wrongly accusing him of state support to the riots. I believe the Nanavati commission report would have served as a more credible source.

That said, overall it is a well written book and will give you a lot of insights into the election campaign.

If you are from India and have followed much of the 2014 elections first hand, there is nothing much to read.
The only not so-much known things are how the back office team worked out the campaign.
The writer has unprecedented access to PMO but there is very little of what Mr Modi told the author.
Through this book Modi wanted "the world to know how we carried out election process for such big country".. Lofty statement - but what he actually said was "tell them how I won the election". Because this is not a book about election process and it is not written from the viewpoint of election commission nor does and nothing about how other parties fought the elections.

A fascinating read for a very niche group

Well, I cannot get into the 'how is it legal to sell this' questions that some of you may have, because I have no idea. The description tells the weird history of this series pretty concisely as well, so I'll just the product itself.
First, this is a damn fine looking volume. The pages are thick enough, the front and back covers are glossy and nice, and the images inside are crystal clear. The best part of this volume is the work that was put into making it look incredible, because it absolutely does.
Unfortunately the other stuff isn't so great. The artwork ranges from pretty good to below average, and it never comes close to being as good as the official DragonBall manga artwork.
The story is somewhat interesting, and very well paced, though the 'new' villains introduced here either aren't new at all or have very uninspired designs. A few of the characters don't seem to react to things quite the way they should, which is frustrating (why does Goku have no reaction to his student of three years suddenly turning evil and killing people?)
All in all, this can only be recommended to hardcore DragonBall fans who are interested in it's weird history or people who really hated GT, but really want a sequel.

remake of boo saga? kind of.

first the drawing are off. the characters draing is not bad but its bad than the other drawings (no offense). And babidi returns and (spoilers alert) use the magic on oob ad makes him evil so oob killed some people in the martial arts tournament and kidnap Pan and gohan got angry transfromed into super sayain but Babidi made a deal to exchange Pan for the four star dragon ball and babidi left while the dragon ball fighters met up and recovered and asked king kai to find pan but he couldnt find her for over two hours. And king kai assumed that babidi took her to the zero universe. It was a interesting strory but the drawings were kind of bad so four star rating.

For nearly 20 years, Wildlife Ecology and Management has endured as a basic text in its field and, because of its continuing acceptance, we pleased to present the fifth edition. Despite the intervening years, however, our goal remains unchanged. Namely, we wish to introduce undergraduate students to wildlife management by presenting a broad overview across a spectrum of topics—wildlife diseases to public policy, exotic introductions to forest management, and predation to urban wildlife. These students, we hope, will include not only those completing degrees in disciplines associated with the conservation of natural resources—forestry, range and watershed management, outdoor recreation, as well as wildlife management—but also those "nonmajors" from other academic areas. Our presentation accordingly does not assume that students have acquired more than modest exposure to the biological sciences. The Glossary remains a major element in the fifth edition, as does a fundamental treatment of ecology in Chapter 4.

WHAT'S NEW

We sought new studies—especially those appearing in the most recent three to four years prior to press time—to revitalize concepts already presented in the book or to present entirely new areas of interest. Among the latter is the removal of dams, not only to restore fish runs, but also to restore, as much as possible, the biota and functions of entire watersheds to their former state. Similarly, this edition includes an overview of global warming in relation to wildlife management and highlights the occurrence of emerging diseases such as chronic wasting disease in deer and elk. We also describe adaptive harvest management—a performance-based strategy for regulating the influence of hunting on wildlife populations—and draw attention to the influence of animal rights groups as well as to the responsibilities of hunters. Continued broadening of the term wildlife also is reflected in this edition, including expanded coverage of marine mammals and concerns for species such as bog turtles and monarch butterflies.

In all, more than 390 new references are cited, of which 71 percent bear dates of 1999 to 2002. Still, older literature often remains the best source to establish a strong and necessary foundation for many subjects, and the implications and results reported in these earlier papers are no less true today than when they first appeared in the literature (e.g., DDT-induced eggshell thinning). Interests also shift through time, and some areas currently attract little, if any, attention. Invasive species have stimulated an avalanche of literature, for example, but wildlife economics and soil-animal ecology have not, and our attempt to update these and some other subjects has not always been fulfilled satisfactorily.

As in the past, we complement these with profiles of colleagues who work "in the real world" where problems of funding, politics, and bureaucratic limitations pose daily challenges to their work.

Worst Binding I've Ever Seen On A Soft Cover

It is horrendous. The glue is uneven, didn't even get all the pages, and is missing on part of the upper binding completely. I literally have pages falling out on their own because they weren't glued in. For what I paid for it, I expect the book to be made properly. I would send it back if i didn't need it for class. I will be rebinding it myself since I can actually do it correctly. Also contains printer errors where letters are not completely formed or parts of letters are shifted. Was this made in some foreign sweatshop?

The material itself is ok. It isn't as boring as most textbooks but the majority of the content I've read so far is just examples of a briefly discussed main point for each section. I find myself skipping a lot of it because I don't learn anything extra from reading countless examples. I read the important parts and sporadic examples instead.

Hopefully mine was a fluke but if this is how all of the soft covers are bound, I suggest spending extra and getting hardcover or getting it at your school where you can ensure the book is in good condition.

Older edition, no problem!

I saved so much money by ordering the older edition. It did not have the nice color pictures of the new edition, but the chapters are in the exact order & have all necessary information.
