Introduction

From its roots in Chicago and New York clubs, House triggered the biggest musical revolution in the UK since punk, and subsequently spawned a welter of electronic genres that have altered the face of modern music and popular culture. The Rough Guide to House traces the route that this propulsive strain of dance music has taken, while pointing towards the elements that may shape its future direction. Presented in an encyclopedic format, The Rough Guide to House covers both the innovators and crucial exponents of House - whether they be producers, DJs, bands or record labels. So what exactly is House? Originally (some would argue it still is) a mutation of disco, House can be widely defined as electronic music with a rhythm set in a 4/4 tempo. While this definition neatly distinguishes House from the abstractions of Techno and the breakbeat foundations of Trip-Hop and drum 'n' bass, it fails to acknowledge the genre's most compelling attribute: its fundamental ability to inspire by bonding emotive, synthesised melodies to locked rhythms. It's this marriage of melody and groove which has formed perhaps the most exciting dancefloor proposition since the birth of disco itself.

House music's roots reside in the hedonistic gay club scene of mid-'70s New York. Manhattan-based DJs such as Walter Gibbons and Larry Levan provided the initial platform for disco to mutate into House by extending and recreating singles from disco labels like Salsoul, Prelude and West End to construct repetitive, hypnotic mantras built to fire up the dancers at clubs like The Paradise Garage (the club which would give House's R&B-soaked cousin its name, garage).

But House music was truly developed in Chicago, initially as a result of Brooklyn-born DJ Frankie Knuckles' residency at the city's Warehouse club in 1977. Like the DJs in New York, he began to alter the raw material of the music he spun at the club by adding pre-programmed drum rhythms from his Roland 909 to the mix to keep the groove constant, thus forming the blueprint for the 4/4 tempo of House, whose name derived from that of his club.

By the early to mid-'80s elemental cuts by Knuckles' disciples, Jamie Principle and Jesse Saunders, began to distinguish themselves from disco with a sound characterised by its raw synthesised energy and simple, skeletal drum patterns. By the mid-'80s Knuckles and another deck virtuoso, DJ Ron Hardy, had influenced a core of talented young kids who seized upon the relatively cheap and easy-to-master range of synthesizers, samplers and drum machines to create their own sonic inventions. Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, DJ Pierre and Steve "Silk" Hurley created the blueprint for Acid House and Deep House with singles released by Chicago's two main independent labels, Trax and DJ International.

Mainstream America was never likely to accept music born from black, gay disco, though, and it was a youth culture bored to death by the materialist aesthetic of the Thatcher era in Britain which catalysed the Acid House explosion. Oh yeah, there was also a little something called Ecstasy, but club music and drug consumption have almost always gone hand-in-hand. Pioneered in the UK by DJs such as Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling and Mike Pickering, British technicians like A Guy Called Gerald, Baby Ford and Bang The Party emerged to stamp their own style on the genre and irreversibly set in motion House music's domination of British dancefloors. It's a combination of all these factors that led to House's mainstream acceptance and subsequent diversification.

But this is only an outline of the music's history. There's no room here to detail the further importance of New York and Chicago, of Ibiza, Manchester, London, Italy and Paris, of the countless other producers/DJs whose contributions have been pivotal. Instead, that's all broken down into individual entries and detailed inside, providing a comprehensive, but by no means detached, guide to House music.

An important book tracing the people, tunes and labels.

Finally, a book on house music capturing the pop sensibilities of the MTV generation, the historical coverage of the New York Times and the song significance of dance music magazines. With a cover graced by none other than Armand Van Helden, HOUSE: The Rough Guide breaks down this musical subgenre in small easily digestible doses.
In keeping with the MTV mindset of short attention spans, HOUSE provides synopses highlighting the salient points of significant contributions DJ's (e.g. Masters at Work, DJ Pierre), producers (e.g. Mood II Swing, Basement Jaxx) and labels (e.g. Nervous, Salsoul) have made to House music. Very much like a NY Times investigative story, Bidder's Rough Guide leaves no stone unturned, reporting on names both past and present in the house music game from Robert Owens to Adeva to Daft Punk to Bobby Konders. The book serves as an excellent resource and reference for beginners to gain knowledge about the genre, for intermidiate house lovers to further their education and for advanced house users as a reference tool to key people.
One added bonus, the book not only covers the people and the labels, but it also names the tunes that catapulted to stardom.

Excellent guidebook for house music...

I take this little book with me everytime I go record shopping. Concise and accurate histories of all the DJ's and record labels that make house music what it is. If you're a house DJ, buy it! I guarantee you'll learn a thing or two, even if you've been a DJ forever.

Sean Bidder's Rough Guide is the penultimate piece one can buy on this topic. It is well-written, provides more behind-the-scenes activity than any other source, and is one-of-a-kind. I wouldn't be without this book. It kicks!!

About the Author

Mark L. Berenson is Professor of Management and Information Systems at Montclair State University and also Professor Emeritus of Statistics and Computer Information Systems at Bernard M. Baruch College (City University of New York). He received his B.A. in economic statistics and an M.B.A. in business statistics from City College of New York and a Ph.D. in business from the City University of New York. Berenson currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in statistics and in operations management in the School of Business and an undergraduate course in international justice and human rights that he co-developed in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Over the years, he has received serval awards for teaching and for innovative contributions to statistics education. In 2005, he was the first recipient of The Catherine A. Becker Service for Educational Excellence Award at Montclair State University. Berenson’s research has been published in numerous journals, including Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, Review of Business Research, The American Statistician, Communications in Statistics, and Journal of Management Sciences and Applied Cybernetics, and Journal of Health Administration Education. He is co-author of 11 statistics texts, including Statistics for Managers Using Microsoft Excel and Business Statistics: A First Course.

 

David M. Levine is Professor Emeritus of Statistics and Computer Information Systems at Baruch College (City University of New York). He received B.B.A. and M.B.A. degrees in statistics from City College of New York and a Ph.D. from New York University in industrial engineering and operations research. He is nationally recognized as a leading innovator in statistics education and is the co-author of 14 books, including such best- selling statistics textbooks as Statistics for Managers Using Microsoft Excel, Basic Business Statistics: Concepts and Applications, Business Statistics: A First Course, and Applied Statistics for Engineers and Scientists Using Microsoft Excel and Minitab.

He also is the co-author of Even You Can Learn Statistics: A Guide for Everyone Who Has Ever Been Afraid of Statistics, currently in its second edition, Six Sigma for Green Belts and Champions and Design for Six Sigma for Green Belts and Champions, and the author of Statistics for Six Sigma Green Belts, all published by FT Press, a Pearson imprint, and Quality Management, third edition, McGraw-Hill/Irwin. He is also the author of Video Review of Statistics and Video Review of Probability, both published by Video Aided Instruction, and the statistics module of the MBA primer published by Cengage Learning. He has published articles in various journals, including Psychometrika, The American Statistician, Communications in Statistics, Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, Multivariate Behavioral Research, Journal of Systems Management, Quality Progress, and The American Anthropologist, and he has given numerous talks at the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), American Statistical Association (ASA), and Making Statistics More Effective in Schools and Business (MSMESB) conferences. Levine has also received several awards for outstanding teaching and curriculum development from Baruch College.

 

Kathryn A, Szabat is Associate Professor and Chair of Business Systems and Analytics at LaSalle University. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in business statistics and operations management. Szabat’s research has been published in International Journal of Applied Decision Sciences Accounting Education, Journal of Applied Business and Economics, Journal of Healthcare Management, and Journal of Management Studies. Scholarly chapters have appeared in Managing Adaptability, Intervention, and People in Enterprise Information Systems; Managing, Trade, Economies and International Business; Encyclopedia of Statistics in Behavioral Science; and Statistical Methods in Longitudinal Research. Szabat has provided statistical advice to numerous business, non-business, and academic communities. Her more recent involvement has been in the areas of education, medicine, and nonprofit capacity building. Szabat received a B.S. in mathematics from State University of New York at Albany and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in statistics, with a cognate in operations research, from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

I have to give Amazon a SUCKS! See attached

Description plainly says Plus NEW MyStat lab. Did not. Amazon states they do not guarantee access codes. This I fully understand. But the description says Plus New My StatLab. The lady I talked to was going to issue the code but her supervisor would not allow it. I usually have a reasonable experience with Amazon. For this one, I have to give Amazon a SUCKS! See attached .jpg.

It's great if you need just the textbook

It's great if you need just the textbook, but if you need the MyStatLab website code, don't even bother. The website says that a code comes with it but that is not true. The code in the front of the book was used and didn't work so I had to return it. If you don't need the website though definitely get it. Otherwise you're best off just getting the ebook on the Pearson website.

The Second Lap - the run you were made for ...

Malcolm McLouglin is an awesome writer - one of the reasons behind my immediately securing a copy of "The Second Lap" upon its release. Secondly, through an odd series of events that connected me to Malcolm as a writer, I became interested in his story and learning more about his journey toward grace. While Malcolm's "first lap" through life differs dramatically from mine, it's the ongoing and concluding work of the "second lap" where our paths coincide ... run parallel. This is the great mystery and miracle of grace - how God finds us on our first laps and, through the power and transformational work of the cross - orchestrates a collaborative/connected second lap of extraordinary worth and value. God has used Malcolm's passion (past and present - addictions that have buried him in the abyss and that have elevated him to heights above) to further the kingdom narrative. His second lap is a story of full redemption - an odyssey of faith where Malcolm's past begins (and continues) to work for him instead of against him. I believe that the greatest miracle God still works in society today is that of a changed heart and life. Malcolm is living proof. I am grateful for his second lap and for how his grace-filled run through this world is lending strength, courage, and hope to my own.

Actual photos published by Johns Hopkins medical of the very animals cured of cancer using forms of Pyruvate are on the web for all to see.

The book goes all the way to Bavaria Germany and Alzchem Co., which holds a Creatine Pyruvate patent since the 1980’s. Alzchem’s 1,600 employees manufacture the best form of Creatine Pyruvate. After flying to San Francisco to meet with Pax Beale, this writer then travelled to Bavaria and met with Alzchem Co.’s scientists. The book also explores the Swiss supplier of German made Creatine Pyruvate, whose Zurich facility was also visited by this author.

As for this book’s Chapter on Lance Armstrong, really nothing has changed since his recent “admission”. Lance did in fact fund two amazing studies in 2011 showing Pyruvate can stop cancer. He was in a hurry to find a cure. He almost died of brain, lung and testicle cancer, which can return. Lance had an unusual interest in a subject most never heard of: how pyruvate in certain forms can stop cancer. Did he know something we should know?

Eye Opening and Informative

The author has chosen to tackle not only an important subject, but an industry that is ripe with Docs who consider themselves just slightly higher than The Almighty. I recommend this book to anyone looking for an alternative to conventional medicine offered as the standard of care. The standard of care is not for everyone, especially those looking to treat the underlying problem and not the symptom. Nicely done Steve Harte!

Not what I expected.

While I am not a medical expert, I did not like the unconventional approach and cure that is advocated in this book. Undocumented results made me reject all of it. Perhaps I should have been warned that this was an unusual remedy,.being more of a common sense person. I might not have bought the book if I had known something more about the author.

This book is extremely helpful for not only those who were recently diagnosed with atherosclerotic heart disease but also the average everyday individual to get their health in order.
