In iconoclastic style, David Didau scours current thinking on education to expose bad ideas masquerading as common sense before presenting an alternative view on how we might think about teaching. The main thing Didau believes we're wrong about is the belief that we can see learning. Like many other beliefs in education this is so deeply embedded in the way we see the world we don't even think about it: it is a self-evident truth. Pretty much every lesson taught by every teacher in every school depends on the idea that we can see learning happen. But if we're wrong about this, what else might we be wrong about? If it's true that learning is invisible, where does that leave Assessment for Learning, lesson observation and the whole concept of 'outstanding' teaching?Didau suggests an alternative to the quick fix culture so prevalent in schools: making learning deliberately difficult. He considers the perceptual and cognitive illusions that keep us in the dark. And presents an alternative understanding of learning and progress. He also introduces the science of how people really learn and suggests ways to implement this approach in schools. And examines the consequences of shifting our understanding of how learning occurs and discusses some of the mistakes we've made about marking, differentiation, motivation and creativity.

This is the kind pf book you could read quickly, but probably shouldn't. You could read it ten times and each time find something new. There is a canon of about a dozen books that I recommend to teachers - most of which are cited in this one. Hey educator/parent/ed policymaker: Going to read one education book this year? Make it this one.

At this point of my life, I've read a LOT of books about education: ed policy, ed theory, ed history, ed practice, ed this, ed that, ed cetera. I can't say, though, that I've read any quite like David Didau's here, mainly because I haven't encountered anything that so effortlessly and thoughtfully mashes up all the standard ed book types. On one hand it's a useful research work, challenging some long-accepted practical truisms to explain and demonstrate how cognitive scientific findings can enhance classroom practice. On another, it's a note of affirmation from a colleague in education's trenches. On still another--well, that'd be three hands, and two is quite enough. You get the idea.

In short this book taught me a lot, made me argue with it occasionally, and presented information I'd previously been familiar with in fresh, exceedingly clever ways. If you love reading about education and are passionate to learn more about what can work and why, I can't recommend many single titles more highly than this one.

One of the best books on education I've read!

This is one of the better books on education and learning I've read. And I've read quite a few. It does a splendid job of pulling together a lot of research and applying it to the task of education, without being prescriptive or idealogical. It is a long book, and the first section about our various biases was a load to plow through. The book moves much quicker after that first section though. Well worth the effort!

Another Great Book for Kids from Scholastic

I love this small book. It's perfect for elementary aged children, in that it provides nuggets of information in a very palatable form. The information is divided into sections about "Business and Law", "Inventors and Innovators", "Leaders and Social Change" , "Music and Arts", "New Frontiers", and "Sports". Each person is given half a page which contains a picture of the individual, birth and death dates, a single paragraph about what they're known for, and then "fast facts".

For example, for Meriwether Lewis it says:

"With his lifelong interests in botany and zoology and his military service, he was chosen by President Thomas Jefferson to lead an expedition across the new country documenting its plants and animals. After his three-year trip with partner William Clark, he became the new governor of the Louisiana Territory."

The FAST FACTS are:

"Thomas Jefferson thought Lewis and Clark might find erupting volcanoes, mountains of sale, and wooly mammoths out west

"Members of the exploring team ate approximately 6 pounds of meat each day -- the equivalent of 24 hamburgers!"

Now if you have older kids, you KNOW that those "Fast Facts" are just the sort of interesting information that they love. Trivia on steroids! And, in fact, I have found that if I leave this book in the car or around the coffee table that the kids will pick it up and read about a few people without urging.

THE SKINNY:::
I think this book is great. It's published on cheap off-color paper but I don't care because it's kid-friendly and a fun way for them to get introduced to a variety of historical figures -- everyone from Charles Lindbergh to Langston Hughes, Steve Jobs to Robert Oppenheimer.

Being short is a huge advantage to time-challenged kids, but it has a downside in that parents might have to fill in the gaps. (If you don't know, there's always Google and Wikipedia.)

My kids -- currently 8 and 10-- will read a section when in the car. It gives us a chance to learn from each other and chat while we drive.

Super Introduction to Biography

I used this book with much success with classes of English as a Second Language students. They found the very short biographies of people they were familiar with to be challenging but readable. I have to admit when I decided to try the book out in class, I had my doubts, but my students just loved it, and were begging for more!

The greatest American inventor is missing here!!!!

This is originally a great idea for a book. Yet I was really disapointed to find that the author forgot to mention the inventor of the electric systems used today; the ac motor, the triphasic electrical system, the ac generator (as in Niagara Falls), wireless communications, remote control, logic circuits, fluorescent lamps and many other (patented or not) without which our lives today would be totally different.
What would America be without Nikola Tesla?!
The author should read "A Man out of Time" the biography of this forgotten electrical engineer who really changed America.

Also recomend "My inventions" by Tesla himself available free on the internet. I suggest the author substitutes Thomas Edison bio for his.

Carl F. Auerbach is a Professors of Psychology at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva University, where he codirect the Yeshiva Fatherhood Project.

Louise Silverstein is a former president of the APA’s Division of Family Psychology. She is Professor of Psychology at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva University, where she co-directs the Yeshiva Fatherhood Project.

Excellent Resource!!

I am finishing up my dissertation - a qualitative case study - and this book was invaluable!! It really helped me logicall and thoughtfully assess my qualitative interview data. The text was easy to understand and will hold up against that dissertation committee review. I really can't recommended enough if you have any qualitative data to analyze. There are other good things in there as well for coding and general qualitative study methodology.

Excellent for Students who need to start Qualitative Data Analysis NOW

I bought this book because I needed to learn how to do qualitative data analysis IMMEDIATELY. Basically, a bunch of work got dumped on me (i.e. 75 pages of transcripted interviews) and I had to get started quickly.

This book is amazing because it focuses on DOING qualitative data analysis. It's a step-by-step guide to get from raw data to solid conclusions (which you can back up using your data). It provides just enough theory to let you know why you're doing what, without getting bogged down. Most importantly, it provides TONS of examples which make things much more concrete and helps with understanding.

There are several different ways to 'do' qualitative data analysis, and this book focuses on a single one. I like this since the book is more concise and the methods the authors use are solid and make intuitive sense.

Basically, I went from knowing nothing about qualitative data analysis to knowing enough to DO qualitative data analysis, just by reading this book. I found the writing style enjoyable and not overly academic, which again helps with comprehension and learning how to 'do'.

Literally, an answer to prayer!

I am working on a Doctor of Ministry degree and didn't know how to organize my survey data. Tried statistical (quantitative) criteria, such as "correlation coefficents" which only resulted in frustration and paralysis. This book showed me that what I'm doing is QUALITATIVE research. The difference: Quantitative research STARTS with a hypothesis that has to be "proved." Qualitative research takes results and PRODUCES a hypothesis, which then becomes one's thesis. The authors give researchers a "cookbook" method for crunching one's data, resulting in a narrative. Hugely helpful to completing my doctoral thesis! Highly recommend it for anyone working in non-scientific fields.

Beautiful work of art

This was the first book by Ruth that I've read, and I love it. I am a big fan of angst and iiked this book because it is chock full of it, and I like that there's no "instant-love" in it. They actually have to work for their relationship. For those who don't like cliffhangers, you should know this has one. But fear not, there's two more books to go! Looking forward to starting the second book!

Ruth Clampett does it again with the first installment of her Work of Art Series! Passion, Art, Food, - what more could you want from this insightful author who writes expertly about all three while unveiling and unraveling a seductive and mysterious story about a smart and capable young girl as she makes her mark in the LA, New York, and Global Art Scene. Improving on her writing formula for Animate Me, this story has cleverly placed Chapter Titles and intriguing thought provoking art related quotes as well as a Los Angeles Landmark Restaurant tour that only an LA Native like Ruth can dish out! I read this fantastic book in one sitting - could not put it down - and now I must patiently wait with bated breath for the next installment!.....please, Ruth! don't make us wait too long!!!!!

YES! Another winner by Ruth Clampett

I give this book 4 and a half stars and the reason it isn't 5 stars is simple, I HATE cliff hanger endings. However it is just a couple of weeks until the second book in the series comes out, so it isn't that bad. Now to the good stuff, I loved the story, real characters in a believable storyline, but written in such a way that you fall in love with them. I nearly cried when it ended, as I wanted more, now, but I will certainly be reading the whole series. Ruth Clampett is a brilliant author and you should get this book now, however don't stop there, get "Mr. 365" and "Animate Me" as well and don't miss out on the "Shiver Anthology" where she has a short story, with some incredible other authors, like Daisy Prescott. Trust me you will thank me.

Film buffs know Frank Borzage (1894-1962) as Hollywood's great romantic. As Martin Scorsese notes in the forward to this translation of a 1993 French monograph, there's not an ironic moment in any Borzage picture. His career apogee came early with the sublime 7th Heaven (1927), and his sound career included such triumphs as A Farewell to Arms (1932) and The Mortal Storm (1940)--in which even death couldn't end the love between couples Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes, and James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, respectively. Although Dumont fills most of the book with synopses, production accounts, and critical assessments of particular films, most of which are seldom screened these days, the biographical details he offers reveal that Borzage was, despite an alcohol problem, as sweet-natured and warmhearted as his work. As post-World War II tastes shifted, Borzage's stock declined so that few but hard-core cineastes remember him. Dumont's authoritative, insightful volume is indispensable for rediscovering one of cinema's greatest and now undeservedly neglected artists. Gordon Flagg

About the Author
Herve Dumont is the director of the Swiss National Film Archive (Cinematheque Suisse) in Lausanne, Switzerland, and is the author of several works on film history. His History of Swiss Cinema (Lausanne 1987) earned the Jean Mitry Award, and Frank Borzage, Sarastro a Hollywood (Paris-Milan 1993) received the Prix Simone Genevois, awarded to the best European film book of the year. He lives in Lausanne. Jonathan Kaplansky works as a literary translator of French in Montreal. His translations include novels by Helene Dorion, Pauline Michel and Helene Rioux, poetry by Serge Patrice Thibodeau, a journal by Annie Ernaux, and several biographies of historical and political figures. His articles have appeared in Palimpsestes and Circuit.

Pretty Darned Impressive...

When film lovers and critics talk about a director with a definite-yet-indescribable style, they usually talk about "the Lubitsch touch". Yet, during my first semester of film school, my professor showed our class the visual and rhythmic devices that Lubitsch used to create his touch. Frank Borzage, on the other hand, truly has a definite-yet-indescribable touch to all his films. And this book describes, analyzes and unites the director's work and life in a very impressive and interesting volume.

There are some flaws, mainly having to do with the author (a Swiss academic) writing about Hollywood. For instance, there are some lengthy phrases used to describe aspects of film-making that could be described better (and more accurately) by movie industry terms. Also, in writing about Borzage working at Warner Brothers, he confuses the 2 addresses of that movie studio: during the Depression Warners was on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, but by World War II they had moved to the town of Burbank. Dumont keeps referring to Warners Studios on "Sunset Boulevard in Burbank" and no such thing exists.

Still, my hat is off to this book, which crystalizes the thoughts and philosophy of one of the great artists of motion pictures.

Wood presents a new and innovative social theory, challenging readers to analyze all our post-intellectual cultural malaise in terms of these three fundamental determinants.

About the Author

DONALD N. WOOD is Professor of Radio-Television-Film at California State University, Northridge. He is author of Educational Telecommunications (1977), Mass Media and the Individual (1983), Designing the Effective Message (1989), and co-author of Television Productions: Disciplines and Techniques (1978, and Sixth ed. 1995).

Yes, a big disappointment

This book proposes that "Intellectualism" was the cause and effect of the "Enlightenment," but that it has been replaced by "post-intellectualism." Wood defines intellectualism as consisting of a search for knowledge, critical thinking, social criticism, and broad liberal arts, all of which he said have been replaced by ignorance, "dumbth" (a decline in analytic thinking), establishmentism (reluc-tance to change the status quo), and specialization, respectively. Wood, who refers to Richard Hofstadter (author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Anti-intellectualism in American Life) only once, believes that "post-intellectualism" started with the dilution of universal education in the 1870s (that at a time when only about 2 percent of the population had a high school diploma!), and continued with the 1890s labor movement, the burgeoning popularity of movies and television (in fact, a major reason for Wood's "post-intellectualism" was the replacement of the "Written Word" by the "Electric Media"), and the growing role of government during the twentieth century.
Wood's book is not a worthy successor to Hofstadter. Although he can point to hundreds of phenomena that he claims are post-intellectual, or at least along the trajectory from intellectualism to post-intellectualism, Wood fails to provide a convincing body of evidence for most of his specific charges. Against mass media, he makes a laundry list of such plausible but unproven accusations: artistic exploitation; corruption by commercial support and special interests; being wracked by mergers; a lack of substantive content; the construction of [unrealistic] "reality"; damage to democracy; the promotion of escapism; the propping up of elites; invasions of privacy; an overemphasis on, or promotion of, violence; and being partially responsible for copycat crimes, suicides, aggressive behavior, desensitization, "mean world syndrome," and "narcotizing dysfunction.") I don't doubt that these are effects of mass media, at least among some people, some of the time, but Wood writes as if they all have been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, and he provides anecdotal evidence, if that, about such effects.
Most importantly, however, his cause-effect relationship between an "intellectual" world and a "post-intellectual" world is ultimately not clearly supported, nor is the unavoidable implication that the United States was once an "intellectual" country.

deeply flawed--big dissapointment.

This book comes with a forward by Neil Postman, who is an excellent, sensitive, and insightful author. Sadly, Wood himself just doesn't measure up to the greatness of Neil Postman. The academic or lay reader would do much better in picking up Postman's own _Technopoly_ and going from there. Finding references in the index to Michael Novak and Peggy Noonan, my initial enthusiasm for the book dropped like a rock. Although he raises a few good points here and there, there are other authors who raise them more coherently and are more free of .... Neil Postman once advocated that critical readers learn to develop an internal "... detector" when they read. Well, my ... detector was going off left and right as I plowed through Wood's text, I'm sad to say. Some authors I'd recommend INSTEAD of Wood include historian David F. Noble, Richard A. Brosio, Noam Chomsky, Kirkpatrick Sale, and especially Theodore Roszack's _The Cult of Information_ which is almost on the same par with Postman's outstanding best work,_Technopoly_.
There is a knee-jerk resistance to socialist, left-progressive critiques and insights about political economy all through out this book, and it maintains what seems to me a shockingly naive & plucky "Libertarian" (e.g. in the political party sense rather than philosophical sense) tone all throughout that is extremely grating. Some of Wood's "suggestions" at the end of the book are praiseworthy, but many of them are completely undermined by some of the other suggestions raised by Wood (a chronic problem of many liberals, which is why I opt for left-radicalism personally). Still other suggestions made by Wood are just plain awful or stupid or both. Wood either has no comprehension of the real nature of power or is very self-deluded about it. Much of the work reads not unlike Walter Lippman from the 1920s, and it's hard to say, reading some passages, if Wood really believes in democracy at all; His mood displays an overall defeatist outlook than one of real moral outrage...there is even a hint of smug elitism in parts of the text. All in all, this is a well meaning but very muddled book and will confuse the lay reader more than help him/her. It's mostly a waste of time. Other authors have said the best of what Wood has to say much better than he.
To be fair, the text IS somewhat dated, too, so Wood's gushing on about "telecommuting" and "distance ed" sound REALLY naive in today's world. These early "promises" of the early 1990s have borne mixed and often rotten fruit in our day. Read David F. Noble's _Digital Diploma Mills_ (2002) for contrast and see what I mean.

Changes in a society of the magnitude of the change computer technology has brought to the world are invariably associated with vast shifts in how that society works.
Mr. Woods has done a brilliant job of explaining how the shift in the way we communicate drives shifts in the we think, function, communicate, desire and have our being.
