From Publishers Weekly
Cornwell (Earth to Earth) reconstructs the story of Joseph Wesbecker, on medical leave from his job in a Louisville, Ky., printing plant, who returned to his workplace in 1989 and shot 20 fellow employees, killing eight of them before killing himself. He also relates the battle by the Eli Lilly pharmaceutical company to fight the damage suit brought by the survivors of Wesbecker's murder spree and the families of the dead, who alleged that his action had been caused by his use of Prozac. The antidepressant drug accounted for about a third of Lilly's multibillion-dollar sales, and eventually the company settled the case via a payout kept secret even from the judge. Cornwell discusses questions being debated by neuroscientists and psychopharmacologists about the link between brain states and human behavior, with some affirming the Cartesian dualism of mind and body, others believing in a narrow reductionism in which the brain is seen as a "meat machine" capable of being controlled, still others asserting the nonmechanistic opinion that human beings have a measure of mental freedom. Cornwell presents a profound analysis of the fundamental question of human identity and of epistemological matters sure to be ongoing concerns as pharmacology becomes even more prevalent in treating the emotionally unstable.

From Library Journal
In 1989, Joseph T. Wesbecker went on a shooting spree at his former place of employment, Standard Gravure, in Louisville, Kentucky. After killing eight people and injuring 12, he took his own life. Wesbecker, on long-term disability leave owing to work-related stress and a history of mental illness, was taking the antidepressant Prozac. The survivors of his rampage sued Eli Lilly, the manufacturer. Journalist Cornwell, a senior research fellow at Cambridge University and visiting fellow at the Neurosciences Institute at Rockefeller University, covered the trial for the London Sunday Times Magazine. Here he addresses not only the trial but also Wesbecker's personal life, the stress faced by blue-collar workers in postindustrial America, the nature of depression, and the development and marketing of Prozac. Cornwell does an excellent job of making the science of psychopharmacology understandable to the lay person and conveying the drama of the trial. He does slightly less well in his attempt to analyze the larger questions raised by the trial?the nature of mental illness, personality, and identity, and the ethics of pharmacological tampering. Transitions between chapters are a bit choppy, but the story itself is gripping. This title will appeal to true-crime readers as well as anyone concerned about the widespread prescription of mood-altering drugs.?Eris Weaver, Marin Inst. for the Prevention of Alcohol & Other Drug Problems, San Rafael, Cal.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
In September 1989, a worker at a Louisville, Kentucky, printing plant opened fire with an assault rifle, shooting 20 coworkers before killing himself. When it was revealed that the worker had been taking Prozac, the surviving victims and the families of the dead filed suit against the manufacturer of the drug, Eli Lily. Although Lily maintained the worker was destined to become a mass murderer, the plaintiffs argued that Prozac had a history of severe reactions and that Lily was selling a drug known to be dangerous. Cornwell, who originally covered the case for the London Sunday Times Magazine, presents Lily's executives as desperate to win, worried that a finding against Prozac could send Lily stock plummeting. And they would do anything to win, eventually wangling an out-of-court settlement that thoroughly manipulated the U.S. legal system. A truly disturbing picture of corporate greed and power. ... the psychiatric drugs they make and market does not amaze me at all

This true account of how far pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly went to cover up their responsibility in how deadly the psychiatric drugs they make and market does not amaze me at all. A must read for anyone seeking the truth.

A good story told bad, real bad.
By A Customer
The Prozac litigation was an interesting case where the law and science never met, as far as the plaintiffs and some of the media were concerned. The author writes with a British bias concerning the American legal system, and this shows in a lack of understanding of what was going on.
This trial was about medicine and the law, and the author seems to understand neither. He poo-poos the state of scientific knowledge about how antidepressants work on the brain ("surely a mere chemical couldn't do THAT") but accepts without thinking challenge that a chemical could make a human being murder another.
That the book is very poorly written is shown in the lack of depth of the interviews, and the facts. The author is very unkind in his physical descriptions of the participants (nice though, that his fact checker let him subtract 10 years from one's age) and their legal skills. In fact, the only lawyer he singles out was the poorest lawyer in the trial, hands down.
A better account could and should have been written. The author has a few preconceived notions to peddle and that it all. Jonathan Harr could have written this better.
Speaking of which, if you liked the Judge in A Civil Action, you'll love the judge in this case-- small time with a conpiracy theorist leaning, and less going for him that Harr's federal judge.

A legal thriller that happens to be true.
By Emilio_Corsetti@Compuserve.com
With the lawsuit mania that exists today, it's not unusual to find big corporations dragged into lawsuits for no other reason than their deep pockets. Lawyers go to extreme lengths to assign fault for even the most tangential involvement. A casual observer to the lawsuit covered in "The Power to Harm" might perceive it as just another baseless attempt of going after the guy with the most money. After all, how could anyone blame a drug for causing someone to shoot twenty coworkers? If you read this book, you'll know the answer.
John Cornwell covers the behind-the-scene details of the trial with great skill and frugality. Nothing is wasted. The facts concerning the drug Prozac are fascinating. I'm truly amazed that the drug ever received FDA approval. Prozac is currently being sold in over seventy countries. If you are taking this drug or are considering taking it, please read this book.
This is a first rate legal thriller where the story and characters are real, and so too are the victims.

Review
Library Journal Starred Review:Tamar Rosenfeld has loved childhood pal Abraham Krasner ever since she was 12 years old. At 19, she confessed her love but was crushed to discover her yearning was unrequited. Fast-forward four years: Abe is now the star linebacker for the New York Leopards professional football team, and Tamar has just moved to the Big Apple to pursue a position as a reporter forSports Today. It was only a matter of time before Tamar's and Abe's lives would intersect, especially since Tamar has been hanging around the team to get a story. Abe was slow to realize his feelings, but now that Tamar is in town, he can't risk losing her again. Tamar refuses to have her heart torn out a second time, but irresistible Abe is making it difficult for her to stand her ground. When an opportunity arises for Tamar to write a piece on the faulty equipment that jeopardizes the safety of the team, she takes it, even when the fallout could cost her and Abe everything.
VerdictAbe's and Tamar's endearing resolve to stay together during a pivotal hour of darkness will make even the harshest cynic want love to prevail. Parr's (Rush Me;Running Back) writing has only gotten stronger in this delightful third foray into new adult territory. This reviewer hopes for much more to come from this author.--Kara Kohn, Plainfield P.L, IL

The Unofficial Addiction Book Fan Club Review: Sweet, sexy Abe!
By The Unofficial Addiction Book Fan Club
We are The Unofficial Addiction Book Fan Club, to know more about this book, go to the post in our website.

REVIEW:

I have been dying to read this book since I started the New York Leopards series. Simply because this is Abraham's story and we get to finally met the girl who has stolen his heart so long ago!
Abraham's a sweet and tender guy, so I his story couldn't be any other than sweet and swoony. And Allison Parr definitely wrote a story for Abraham that totally made him justice.

Tamar Rosenfeld's one of those girls who fell in love with her best friend and to make matter worse both their families are like a one big family. So there's no chance to hide when you confess to the guy you are in love with him and he rejects you.

After a couple of years apart and not knowing from one another, Tamar and Abraham find each other again in New York: Tamar's working as a reporter for one of New York's premier athletic website and Abraham's in the New York Leopards as a linebacker. So yes, they get to see each other a lot.

Tamar's determined to get over Abraham's once and for all, but being over her sexy first love when he wants her, might be kind of complicated.

I loved this story. Is a second chance at love and a tribute to those romantic stories where the guy tries to make the girl fall in love all over again (although Abraham didn't need a lot of help with that).

The two main characters are simply amazing. They are the younger couple so far in the series, so I kind of related more to them. Tamar is the perfect representation of every girl who fell in love with her best friend. She's sweet, good, smart and kind, without loosing her attitude towards some problems and determined to do what she believes is the right thing to do. You find yourself easily liking the girl and you get deep into the story thanks to her.
And Abe's simple the perfect guy every girl's dream boy. He's sweet, funny and determined to have Tamar as more than friends and amend his mistake when he was younger and didn't follow Tamar.

I might have wanted a little bit more "resistance" from Tamar, because it was "too easy" for Abe to get her back. Although, that's exactly what happens when you're madly in love and you cannot control your hormones, right? So I can forgive her. And I would have also wanted to follow more closely her bucket list.
As for the story in general, I liked that we get to be "inside" Tamar's head, the girl who steals Abe's heart, but since this is Abe's story I would have wanted to also be "inside" his head. I think that applies to all the books in the series: I also want to know what the boys are thinking! I'm kind of in love with them, that's why.

The ending's simply perfect. Something you'd expect from a love story like Tamar and Abe's. So I can tell you that when I finished the book I had a big goofy and dreamy smile in my face and I re-read the ending twice. Definitely the best ending of the series.

Without a doubt, this story was the sweetest story in the New York Leopards series and one you don't want to miss. Tamar and Abraham are perfect for each other and you can easily see it as soon as you get to know both characters. I like to see the New York Leopards gang grow and include into the girls "team" such a sweet girl like Tamar is.
I highly, highly recommend this book to those romantics out there who want a sweet story to read. Abe would melt and steal your heart and you'd want to have Tamar as a friend! You definitely have to read it. And I will anxiously wait for more books in this series, 'cause there are more players in the team and I can't wait to read about their stories!

Loved, loved this book!
By Mandy @ I Read Indie
Regret filled his face and he moved his arms as though to pull me into a hug. "Tammy-"
But that was all I needed, to be comforted by Abraham Krasner for being idiot enough to fall in love with him at first sight, and stay that way for close to a decade. He was too perfect, and I clearly was not, and I was in no shape to handle that.
So instead of collapsing against him, I stumbled back, unable to take his soulful, tragic eyes, I ran.
**

A few years back Tamar confessed her love to her best friend right before he took off to New York to play pro football. Unfortunately he didn't feel the same. Fast forward to the present and Tamar finds herself running in the same circles as Abe thanks to her new job. Abe is still with the Leopards and Tamar is a reporter that covers his team. Abe wants another chance with her but Tamar thinks it is too risky and will only be left brokenhearted. Again. Will Abe be able to prove himself to Tamar? Will her job jeopardize this new relationship with Abe?

I had no idea this was book 3 of a series. At least I don't recall knowing. It may have been mentioned and I just forgot. Point being? After seeing who the first two books were about and seeing those characters in this story, it is safe to say that it is ok to read them out of order. And now I definitely want to go back and read these other 2 books. Because this author is one heck of an author.

**
"I am afraid that loving you is like riding a bike. That if I let myself remember how to do it, I'll fall so hard and fast that I'll never be able to recover."
He kissed me hard and swift, like a branding. "I don't want you to be able to recover."
**

I was a little taken aback with Abe. I went into this story thinking he was going to be a womanizing, arrogant jerk. Finding out he wasn't was like being doused with cold water. He was actually a really great guy and a decent one. Tamar really is going to have a hard time rejecting him.

I can see where Tamar is coming from though. It was enough to have your heart broken at 19, you sure don't want it done again when starting over all alone in a new city with a new job. But seeing Abe slowly chip away her defenses had me smiling. I rooted hard for this guy. They needed to find their way back to each other.

**
We would never give each other up. But that didn't necessarily mean that we would get to keep each other, either.
**

Great storyline, amazing characters...this book was absolutely fabulous. I didn't want to put it down once I started. And it was so easy to fall back into once I started it again. I quickly read through this book and was a little sad once it was over. I am soon going to pick up those other two books just so I can hang on to this world the author created a little bit longer. 5 Adoring stars!

I have truly enjoyed all of the "Leopard" books, but...
By L. Wilson
Allison Parr writes an engaging, interesting story that pulls you in and has you rooting for her characters. However, as in the previous two books, she needs to find a new proofreader. One or two typos, wrong tense usage, wrong word usage might be overlooked, but all three of these books are overflowing with these sorts of errors. It distracts from the flow of the story, when you have to re-read a sentence or paragraph to make sure you didn't miss something due to dropped words or improper words. I hate to see these things, because her stories are very good and deserve your complete attention - and enjoyment.

Author Hanspeter Kriesi has analyzed nearly twenty years of post-election surveys in Switzerland (1981-1999), which he has contextualized according to the various political issues and the relevant arguments provided by the political elites. This book's core argument is that the citizens who participate in direct-democratic votes make competent choices. Kriesi's extensive empirical research shows that the majority of these voters arrive at their decisions on the basis of arguments about the advantages and disadvantages of the available options. The less competent and less interested citizens either do not vote or, if they do, employ heuristic shortcuts allowing them to make approximately reasonable decisions. Kriesi provides strong support for an optimistic view of direct-democratic decision-making but also indicates that this process, wherever it occurs, can be improved by proper institutional design and by appropriate strategies enacted by the political elite.

Review
A fascinating book based on an original data set by a leading scholar on Swiss democracy. Well worth reading. (Bruno S. Frey, Institute for Empirical Research in Economics, University of Zurich)

"Democracy has to be re-invented if it is to remain democratic." That is an oft-heard slogan these days. Ironically, Hanspeter Kriesi demonstrates that there is a lot that potential re-inventors can learn from one of the world's most archaic democracies: Switzerland. Anyone with more than a passing interest in direct, participatory, or deliberative democracy should read this definitive (and sobering) study. (Philippe C. Schmitter, Professor Emeritus, European University Institute)

Direct Democratic Choice offers a solid, systematic assessment of the voters' choices in votes on referendums and initiatives. In a both theoretically and empirically innovative way Hanspeter Kriesi demonstrates that voters may very well decide competently in such direct democratic choices. While focusing on the Swiss experience, given its broad-reaching theoretical argument and its thorough empirical investigation, the book is a must-read for any student of voting behavior in referendum and initiative campaigns, as well as for any serious scholar interested in possible future developments of democracy. (Simon Hug, Institut fr Politikwissenschaft, Universitt St. Gallen)

Switzerland might almost be said to be the inventor of direct democracy in the modern world. It is certainly the country which makes most extensive use of it in the modern world. In this splendidly thorough and direct book, Hanspeter Kriesi confronts three crucial questions about the capacity of ordinary citizens to vote on policy: decisions are too complex for them: participation is too low: they are exploited by demagogues. Using an unparalleled collection of aggregate and individual data Kriesi shows that none of these criticisms are true for the Swiss case or, by extension, in general. Importantly for present debates, he also demonstrates that the institutional and party input to voting decisions is crucial, and that most citizens rely on arguments rather than party or other cues to take a decision. This is an important book for all interested in direct democracy to buy and read. Its impressive weight of evidence on the workings of policy elections renders it uniquely authoritative. (Ian Budge, University of Essex)

It wasn't what I thought it would be. Very dry and "scientific" writing.

Dr. Ambedkar and Untouchability: Fighting the Indian Caste System (The CERI Series in Comparative Politics and International Studies)By

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891–1956) rose from a community of "untouchables," to become a major figure in modern Indian history. Christophe Jaffrelot's biography reconsiders Dr. Ambedkar's life and thought and his unique combination of pragmatism and idealism. Establishing himself as a scholar, activist, journalist, and educator, Ambedkar ultimately found himself immersed in Indian politics and helped to draft the nation's constitution as law minister in Nehru's first cabinet. Ambedkar's ideas remain an inspiration to India's Dalit community.

Ambedkar a failure?
By Ganjur
Christopher Jaffrelot, Director of the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches Internationales, has written a well-balanced account of history of untouchability in modern India in general and Dr Ambedakr in particular.
Ambedkar was born in Mahar community, the largest scheduled caste community in Maharashtra -- the land of Mahars -- the birth place of anti-Brahmin movement, which gave inspiration to such virulent anti-Brahmins such as Periyar and Anna Dorai. He was born as Ambavade, Ambedkar was his teacher, a Brahmin, who took an interest in Ambavade and gave his own name to him. Thanks to Maharaja of Baroda, who had anti-Brahmin sentiments, he was able to go to Columbia University in the USA, on the condition that he works for the king for 10 years. Unfortunately, when Ambedkar returned, he was unable to work for the Maharaja because he could not get a lodge in the city, nobody wanting to board an untouchable. Dejected, he resigned and went back to Bombay. He, with the help of another Maharaja, of Kollhapur, who was worried about Brahmins' aspirations for their `long-lost' power, went to England and got his degree in economics. The book gives a good description of agonies of the caste system, with its ----ascending order of hatred and descending order of contempt -as Ambedkar used to frequently say, Ambedkar's efforts to unite the untouchables, his own political ambitions, his role in writing of the Constitution and finally, his religious conversion to Buddhism .
Caste System: Before Phule's anti-Brahmin movement, there was an effort by others in the community, notably the great poet Chokamela, who saw good things in Brahmins and made efforts to emulate them. Phule not only derided these efforts at `Sanskritization' but attacked the Bhakti movement of Chokamela, as that `equalized all castes only spiritually, but not socially'. Phule and later Ambedkar, claimed Mahars are persecuted Buddhists who became decadent because of segregation and inhuman treatment by the caste Hindus, this being the reason why Mahars consider Brahmins as inauspicious and don't permit them to enter their colonies and begging was not considered as a charity but a right. His efforts to unite dalits was not more successful because, Ambedkar although brilliant was not a great organizer and the popularity of Gandhiji among dalits was so high that Ambedkar had to back off in confrontations with Gandhi, the most notable of these battles being the separate vote block the British agreed to create as wanted by Ambedkar. Gandhi went on a fast and Ambedkar relented. Ambedkar claimed that Mahars were not Hindus, but fought for admitting them into Hindu temples and stated very early in his career that he was not going to die as a Hindu.
Interestingly, Ambedkar did not blame the Brahmins for the caste system, instead blaming the Scriptures which described the caste system, saying that even non-Brahmins wanted to follow what is written in the Scriptures out of devotion or fear. The `Scripture' that is quoted most often is Manusmrithi and Purusha Sukta which states Brahmins originated from the mouth of the Lord and shudras only from the legs. He was against reserved quotas for the dalits.
Religious conversion: Ambedkar seriously considered conversion in 1936. He openly wrote about the three religions he was considering, Christianity, Islam and Sikhism, mostly analyzing what each of these of religions have to offer in terms of economic, political and social power to his community as hundreds of thousands of dalits were willing to convert to the religion of his choice. It is interesting to note that Christians showed no interest, saying that they did not want anybody to convert to Christianity for any reason other than spiritual, while the leaders of other two religions began to court Ambedkar. Even Shankaracharya of Karweer peet encouraged them to convert to Sikhism saying that there is really no hope for real change in the Hindu caste system.
When Ambedkar did convert just few months before his death, he did seem to do it for the right reasons. He rejected Christianity and Islam because they are not of Bharatiya culture. Many Mahars converted in the next 10 years, so much so the number Buddhists went up from 2500in 1950's to 2.5 million in 1960's. In my opinion, while it is hard to call him failure, he definitely did not achieve his full potential, because his motivation was hatred, which one can argue is understandable. If we break the ascending order of hate, may be that will eliminate the descending order of contempt and vice versa.

A Sophisticated, Informative Read
By Will Jerom
Jaffrelot has written a concise book on B.R. Ambedkar, engaging some very important scholarship on the man. Those familiar with the leader of the Mahar Untouchables (Ambedkar converted to Buddhism, opposed the caste system, opposed "Gandhism", and was instrumental in writing the Indian Constitution) will appreciate this book. The author largely defends Ambedkar while admitting that Ambedkar was not successful in accomplishing many of his goals. For those unfamiliar with Ambedkar, Buddhism, or India, this will be a tough read. Jaffrelot does not have a glossary, and expects his readers to be fairly conversant with the context of Ambedkar's life. So experts will love the book, while novices will find it difficult to digest.
